The major non-English languages seem to be Turkish, Polish and Spanish.

I'm interested by the large concentration of Spanish (and to a lesser extent French) around Green Lanes. I didn't realise there was a large Spanish speaking community there.

Vodafone Customers

I finally got fed up of the non-existent Vodafone signal in my flat, and reported it to Vodafone, who have determined that this is because of weak 3G signal in the area.

They've said that the more people who contact them about having similar problems (weak/no 3G etc), the more chance there is of them fixing it.

So if you're a Vodafone customer, please please please submit a network issue report via their forum:

In the meantime, if you've got a smartphone and have a weak phone signal, you'll need to disable 3G on your phone.

School alarm going mad

Singing Group/Informal Choir - would anyone be interested?

Hello All,

I am a local piano teacher/Music graduate/Teaching Assistant who would love to start up a weekly singing group open to all (not just those who can read music).

We could sing whatever members wanted to learn and I would accompany us on the piano and lead the group. People could bring along anything they wanted to share with the group and teach others songs they knew. I currently have a repertoire of jazz standards/gospel/classical/pop/world choral music that would work well in four part harmony but could easily be adapted to suit whoever turned up...

Anyway, I have a few friends who I have persuaded that this would be a good idea (and that they don't need to be pissed to sing in public) and just want to see if anyone would be interested.

It would be free by the way!

White cat appeared in my garden..

A lovely white cat keeps turning up in my garden. I cant' tell if it's just curious or a little distressed/lost. It was just outside making noise and it is freezing out there, and I think all sensible cats will be curled up on radiators.

Have you lost a white cat or know someone who has? It has a collar and bell but no ID.

A Million Minutes - arts commissions for Archway / Finsbury Park

Collaborations between artists and shops, across visual art, drama, music, film & video, digital arts, literature / spoken word and crafts (their order not mine, I'd never put craft last!).

Anyway there's a deadline 11am this Monday 14th Jan for people who want to register their interest to go for a commission in the third and final strand - 'Spaces'. Two commissions with budgets of £28K, one for event-based work and the other something more long term and 'physical'. The application requires quite a lot, so not much notice. I'd probably go in for it myself if I had time.

Joining Brownies

I'm a leader (Tawny Owl) at one of the local Brownie packs. As we have started new packs and have some girls going up to Guides soon, we now have a few spaces for new Brownies to come and join us. The spaces get filled quickly and there is often a waiting list so I just thought that SG'ers might like to know about it first.

Brownies is for girls aged 7 - 10 and is open to girls of all races, religions and abilities. I have just joined this website and note that last summer questions were being asked as to what was being built on the site of the old cinema fronting John Jones Art Framers.

I am the developer and will be building a mix of luxury one bed and two bed apartments http://www.s-and-oproperties.co.uk (Flash enablement will be necessary to view the images) Completion is due September 2009

The ground floor and basement area are for restaurant and retail units which will shortly be marketed. The final mix will depend on prevailing market conditions and interest.

We are hoping this will greatly enhance the station end of Stroud Green Road

Italian conversation

Does anyone have any recommendations for finding an Italian conversation class or group in Stroud Green? Perhaps a swap with English conversation for someone wanting better colloquial English?

There are plenty of Italian speakers around here, but I find that if you enquire in any of the Italian pizzerias or restaurants they come over all shy and embarrassed. It really needs a professional approach. Reasonably advanced level, but don't like big shouty groups.

We are asking for a £5 contribution from all attendees (which includes shoe hire and your first drink) and that everybody brings something edible to share (shop-bought is fine!); we are also doing Secret Santa, max gift value £5. Islington arts and media school - any good?

My landlady says it was 'bad as George Orwell' and I don't really know what to think. (never read any). Can you give any advice on this school. They can't afford to go private at least not yet. I thought I would give them their own thread, rather than the one with Sable D'Or as the title.

Went in this morning. Had a raspberry danish pastry which was very very nice. £1.30 for take away which seems reasonable to me. Mind you as our current Saturday breakfast is two cinnamon danish from Sainsbury's for £1 it could start adding up.

I think this is exactly the right sort of place for the area and those who trek over the hill to Crouch End for this sort of place might hang around and make it a success. That said I didn't try the coffee. I also think it is a good complement to Front Row.

Main thing was that the place was proper busy, even only on day 2 with plenty of folk breakfasting. Other observations: they had a few newspapers to read; stock was running low but this might be that they are under providing until they know what trade patterns will be like; the way they have decked it out is really nice particularly roofing over the old smoking area.

Still think it should be Boulangerie 'Du' Bon Matin but what do I know?

I just ordered some last-minute gifts from John Lewis On-Line, although feeling a bit grumpy at the thought of going to Oxford Street on the weekend before Christmas to collect ... imagine my delight when selecting the store from which to collect, that the small electrical items I ordered can be delivered for collection to Waitrose Crouch End on Saturday. Although not a local grocery store I would normally use this is darn handy.

I love you John Lewis. Being aspirational middle-class never felt so good!

Bin raid olympics

I've just had a few bits and bobs done in my kitchen and as a result left a manky old gas oven covered in gunk on the pavement with a view to taking it to the tip the next day. It was also with 4-5 smashed up cupboards made of chipboard. Within 12 hours (overnight) the lot had gone! The next day i left a tumble drier in the same spot....this time gone in 10 minutes!!!!!!! What is the rankest thing that you've had raided and can anyone beat my 10 minute exposure time on the tumbie.

Primary School nightmare

Anyone else trying to get their child into a decent primary school this September? I'd be interested in hearing the experiences of other parents. We live on Upper Tollington Park and we've been allocated Tiverton Primary, deep in Tottenham, for our daughter. What gives? I love this area, but can't stay if that's the best Haringey Council can do. (Hubby is a teacher, so London will be losing a key worker, too!)

New Park for the Area - Crouch Hill Park

As mentioned elsewhere on this site, Ashmount School is moving to the old, derelict, Crouch Hill Park

Work is due to start on-site in January 2011 and finish in the summer of 2012.

Representatives from Islington Council and Willmott Dixon will be there to answer your questions and provide information about the future of Crouch Hill and the construction works. The meeting will be chaired by Jeremy Corbyn MP.
