In a rare post that in that category "Actually about Stroud Green" [now moved to Reviews - David], the Front Room Cafe has just opened on tollington park. It's really nice, they're going to put wireless in, it's non-smoking and they let the dog in. The owner was a really good chap and I think it could be really successful.
Makes me think we should have a directory thing as well as a message board.
When I have more time, I'd like to build some sort of streetsensation thingy but not for one street, more the area in general. Maybe even hook into the fabled google maps API?
Just had lunch here and they have now officially got next door! Brilliant. It's going to be a deli + more cafe. Ace.
The idea that the FRC is too cool is sweet. Rob and Polly are lovely and friendly. Go in and say hello.
That said, some of my trainers are really expensive.
I don't know, if the dogs are going to be serving food I'd let them in - I'd want to see that.
The Front Room is a nice place, but it's just lacking the extra effort to make it good. It's like they think they are so trendy and friendly that it doesn't matter about the fact that the food's expensive and not very good.
I went for breakfast with a friend a couple of weeks ago and at about £10 each including coffee it's a bit steep. I resent paying £7 for Eggs Benedict when they overcook the eggs, don't butter the muffin and can't be bothered to grill the ham. I always complain when something's not right, and they are very apologetic, but nothing ever improves.
Can't be bothered!
@WillM - I just expect them to serve it properly by default. Perhaps I expect too much for my seven and a half quid.
@willM Really? I'm a caterer by trade and a trained chef, and have worked in London hotels and restaurants (and in Paris and Amsterdam as well). I have never seen nor heard of Eggs Benedict served with ungrilled ham and unbuttered muffins. I can't think why anyone would want to, it's awful! the fact that the FR serve it on a cold plate and the muffins always seem a bit hard adds insult to injury. All I'm ssaying is that with a bit of extra care and effort they could vastly improve the food and the customer experience, but they don't really seem that bothered.
I'm not that bothered.
Aye, Bravo Rob. Never been in before, but will swing by now on the basis of this robust defence! All the best A
Good response Rob, I know it can be difficult to please all the people all the time. It's great that you have responded. Sorry about the moan, I just think some things are really easy to get right and now you're aware I'm sure you'll sort them.
I rarely breakfast or lunch out, but on the times I have been to Front Room is has delivered.
Never the best I've had, but nearer the better end of the scale. They also occasionally when I work a Sunday make me a coffee early of a morning before they have opened properly. I like that.
Yes, a quick glance at the punters does always deliver the same feeling I get when I see a Clapham/East Dulwich/Crouch End smug cafe. But that's a good thing. We've got plenty of workers caffs dishing out bog standard breakfasts and an independent business trying to break the mould and working extremely long hours deserves praise.
Front Room is a greater force for good than it is for evil and should be celebrated for that. Well done Robert.
Perhaps Front Room is Joe Cole: might not be your bag and may not always play the best game, but has the potential for flair and interest that others don't and always appears to be trying. I'd rather have it than not by a low way.
Cheers Jandb
I reckon SG's Emile Heskey is the Larrik, rarely scores but puts in a solid performance and makes those around it play better
@ lizbet My point over pricing was not that it's expensive per se, but that when you pay that much you want it to be right ie. value for money.
Or maybe it's Graeme Le Saux because it's underrated and the victim of lazy stereotypes.
If only Graeme Le Saux had had dreadlocks, that would have been absolute genius.
I had a mate who insisted for a while Le Sox was the best left back in the world.
Getting tired of this discussion to be honest. Can we move onto something else?
We went in there recently for the first time in ages - I used to go there a lot but my Saturday lunch routine changed. I have had a bit of a downer on it in the past but the coffee was a lot better than before, they moved a person who was on a table for 4 on their own with a laptop and the food was fine.
