Save Crouch Hill Station House
  • Stroud Greeners will know the station house on Crouch HIll, just before you get to the station. This is a historic building and, I think, one of only two if its kind left in London.

Last year campaigning by local residents, and local councillors, meant that a plan to demolish the station house and build on the site were defeated.

I am sorry to report that the owner of the Station House has submitted a new planning application to demolish the building and construct a large new building in its place. This will be discussed by the North Area Planning Committee on 16 March.

Your help will be vital to help save this historic local landmark again.

The most important thing you can do at this stage is to object to the planning application. You can do this by emailing the case officer at Ashley.niman@islington.gov.uk and the chair of the planning committee at Wally.Burgess@islington.gov.uk (please copy me in at Richard.watts@islington.gov.uk). The planning application which can be viewed on the Council’s website (www.islington.gov.uk) by selecting ‘Online Planning Service’ found under ‘Do it’.

It is vital that as many local residents as possible object to this planning application. Each objection makes a big difference.

    Thanks in advance,

    Richard
  • Direct links to the planning applications are (hopefully) here and here.

  • I've sent an email objecting to this.

  • I'm writing one too. I can't work out why this application (which I gather was initially rejected, and then rejected again on appeal) has this time been recommended for approval.

What is the point of having a conservation area if the planning committee go ahead and pull down rare historical and interesting buildings to replace them with cheap, characterless modern ones?

From what I gather the committee are obliged to reject these applications in most cases. This is a situation where sending an email will likely make a difference.

  • This is a historic building and, I think, one of only two if its kind left in London.

    A couple of questions...
    • It may be an old building but, why is it historic?
    • It's one of only two of specifically what?
If I'm going to object I need to know why I'm objecting.
  • Guys, I have taken a good look at the documentation on LBI's website and I am not sure that there is much to object to. The previous application was for a higher building on the street frontage but this new application seems to be in keeping with the surroundings, both in terms of height and design (the reason it failed last time). The retail unit would be a welcome addition to the street (as noted by the inspector) and for access to the station. Also, the Planning Inspector did not seem particularly bothered with the principle of the loss of the existing buildings last time round (this will be a major 'material consideration' in the new application).

If you are going to object solely on the basis of the loss of this building do bear this in mind. In pure planning terms it looks ok to me.

(I should state here that I'm a town planner by training - no connection to any of our local boroughs, or the developer (who I have never heard of))

  • Can you actually see this wonderful architectural gem from the main road? I obviously need to do a walk-by cos all I can remember in that location is some ropey gates and hideous tiles!!

  • I've objected too. It is a conservation area and we need to protect the character and history of the area.
  • I remember when they were filming 28 Weeks Later round there and I came around the corner from Stapleton Hall Road into Crouch Hill - it was only when I saw the overturned car and lighting rigs that I realised something was going on, I didn't bat an eyelid at the mounds of litter piled up all over the place.

It's not exactly Castle Combe, nor even Little Green Street.

  • I walk by this building when I catch the train from Crouch Hill every morning. It's been in various states of repair for some time. but it never seems to improve or have it's "garden" cleared of suff.

Is it just the lower building in this photo, or the house behind it too? http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3031/3050658306_f0d559d763.jpg
(not taken by me, check out the whitewashed windows)

I mean, what are the lego sculptures in the window? I've taken countless photos of fridges and all sorts that have been thrown out and were almost blocking the top of the stairs down to the platform.

My suggestion – after somebody explains why it's so historic and why it should be valued – would to sell it back to TfL. The guys working on the platform are housed in a little portacabin, though they tell me there are plans to upgrade their office some time before 2012. Why not put the building to the use it was originally designed for?

That is something I would put the weight of my opinion behind.

  • Thank to those who have objected so far.

The application is to demolish both the low building and the house behind it and replace them with a modern building that continue the line of shops and runs around the back of Japan Crescent, blocking some of their light.

Yes the low building has been run down by the owner over the last few years, but it is historic because it is one of the very few example left of this kind of building in London. I think the building adds to the character of the area and, along with the Dairy and Japan House, makes up a group of interesting buildings - which is why we pushed for the area to become a conservation area.

This is one of those issues where an email could make a big difference - please do help.

  • oh, so this is where the dumb dairy/diary thing started

  • oi watts! I saw your photo in friday's tribune holding the save our station house placard. (I'm watching you.... ;-) )
  • That placard was a work of art.
  • What ever happened to this ? Chang

  • Matt, how right you are. Those poor workers stuck in that plastic box.
