02 phone signal - grrrr
  • Does anyone else have problems with an 02 phone signal? It is driving me mad because the signal starts off clear but always dies within the first minute. It only happens in Stroud Green. I have to go outside to make a call. And yes, it does seem to be getting worse.

I've tried complaining, upgraded the phone, changed the sim card but nothing works. I've concluded it just has to be a diabolical signal, but 02 don't agree. I am getting really fed up with standing in the freezing snow in the road trying to make a phone call.

Is Stroud Green becoming a mobile black spot, surely we don't have to put up with this in this day and age (etc, etc)?
  • My flatmate and I both us iPhones on O2 ... and yes we've both noticed a drop off in signal in the area
  • I have the same problem, have to go outside to make a call as well even when it says I have a decent signal.

I thought it was just because we live in a basement flat.
  • I raised it to an engineer, and they tried to re-align the mast somewhere. Didn't really help.

Comes and goes in my flat. Contract is up in January, so have iPhone unlocked and will try my work's Vodafone sim to see what the signal is like. My Blackberry gets a signal all the time.

I have to re-direct my iPhone to my landline when I'm at home or I miss calls.
  • Orange ain't that hot either.
  • I've found the Vodafone signal to be rather patchy up my way (up the hill off the north end of Stroud Green Road).
  • My 3 signal is almost non-existant on Upper Tollington Park. When I looked at the coverage checker on the web, there appears to be a big hole in coverage within a few hundred yards radius of my house. Why wasn't I told this when I renewed my contract? It was fine when I lived round the corner. I've been getting texts saying they're working on improving the network in the area so perhaps it will be sorted soon.
  • 02's a bit hit and miss on Mount View Rd.
  • Hmm just swapped my sims and unlocked my iPhone. O2 sim give 0-1 bars/'searching...'. Vodafone sim gives 4 bars. Nice.

I don't use 3G, the coverage at my work is awful, so was advised by O2 to 'turn it off and use wifi for data'.

    At home off Oakfield road.
  • My signal on Three is also near non-existent around Lancaster Road. We clearly need some more mobile phone masts all round.

Could someone please tell the more scientifically-challenged campaigners among us (including the MP as well as the council who are both bent on stopping us getting decent reception)?

  • According to the O2 coverage map we have 'high' levels of on-street coverage (Video calls) and HSDPA coverage (i.e. enhanced 3G)

    Clearly bollocks.
  • surely life is too short for all this whingeing about phone reception......
  • I think we're perfectly entitled to whinge - we're paying for a service that is clearly not being delivered
  • communication vastly improves our lives. Not being able to arrange things quickly and to be able to keep in contact easily is precisely the problem. Time is wasted, happiness foregone. Put simply life is too short not to whinge about mobile phone reception.

  • Life is too short to spend ages putting your clothes on and going into the street to make a phone call, when you could be doing it inside, preferably in bed. And I'm paying for it and I ain't gettinng it.
  • My signal on 02 is great. I am writing this from my bed whilst making a call.

  • Shoelaces, always had a problem why we should do them up to make it more difficult to take shoes off.

  • This could be because most of the base stations are on the otherside of the Railway

    See http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/frame_map.htm

Put in your post code and then zoom out

  • My O2 signal dies within the first minute as well despite starting clear. Very infuriating. I end up having to talk in the street, Albert Rd, as the conversations carry on.
  • @ali - very useful little map, it explains why the signal is better at the back of my house.

If the story about 02 screwing up over iPhones is true (seems very plausible) then it sounds like I should move to Vodaphone as soon as my contract expires. Or does Vodaphone have iPhone issues as well?
  • Just wanted to warn you that I had just about the worst customer service experience of my life with Vodafone, about two years ago. I found myself waking up during the night having dreamt of endless phone conversations with disinterested, incompetent Vodafone staff.

They don't seem to have a record of previous phone conversations, even though they say they do, and you'll have to be prepared to summarise your problem including the twenty previous conversations every time you're in the sad situation of having to ring them, only to find that they are genuinely NOT interested in helping you.

Just google something in that direction. I remember there were quite a number of discussion boards with Vodafone customers who had made a similar experience.
  • T-mobile crap in our Oakfield Rd basement flat. Orange slightly better but not much. What to do?

  • I've had pretty mixed experience with Vodafone (some of which I blogged about, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be one mobile operator that stands out for consistent excellent customer service. People both rave and rant about them all..
  • Don’t know whether reception has improved or not but you can now find out

    http://www.o2.co.uk/coveragechecker

You can also find out where O2 wireless Hotspots are and where the actual masts are.

I was surprised how many there are and that central SR looks like a god place for an additional one

  • I'm on UTP and T-mobile signal is consistently terrible, also 3G is non-existent in most of the flat. Vodafone is fine and always at full strength.
  • My phone reception has always been pretty poor, but I put it down to being on the ground floor of a large Victorian house. I figured all those bricks must interrupt the signal. Though to be fair, I'm rarely that desperate to talk to anyone so if I lose the signal, I can get back to a bit of peace and quiet.

I believe a mast was due to be built on the covered reservoir, but it was blocked at planning stage because of the views from MVR.

  • Jenowl - sign up to the Orange / T-Mobile signal sharing, it works quite well apparently.
  • Jenowl I'm also on UTP. O2 iphone consistently rubbish, no 3G at all (one bar if I hang out the window). Vodafone work mobile consistenly 5 bars and full 3G.
  • WillM - I attempted to do that but can't work it out. It said I was now signed up but I never get the option of Orange when the T-mobile signal goes. I followed all the settings instructions (iPhone). Guess I will have to phone T-mobile which usually adds more frustration to the original frustration.

Four Eyes - I know, I end up getting cross and waving the phone around trying to get a signal, while partner's Vodafone is fine throughout every room.
  • I'm in the West Village and only get 3G on the iphone in my kitchen, and the signal there is still hit and miss - nothing at the front of the house. I mainly use my BT landline now. The broadband is fabulously speedy on the laptop now that we have Infinity over here.

  • Was with 3 for a while but the reception was so rubbish in Tollington PArk that I gave up. Apparently it was because too many people locally were on 3!!!! Orange has been pretty consistent for me.
  • It's 3G for the iphone (which is on O2) that is problematic. I didn't realise 3 still existed.

  • 3 coverage on UTP has always been terrible. My lodger is on Orange and has had virtually no signal all day.

  • My Orange phone always claims to have a good signal, but will consistently decide to end my calls, or that the other half of my conversation isn't allowed to hear me any more...

    Pretty annoying.

I'm in the Woodfall Road neck of the woods, for anyone painting a mental map of signal bad patches.
  • I called Orange yesterday and they said there are "mast problems" in this area (since Friday last week). Should be fixed by today!
So far, no improvement. Very annoying.
  • I am in orange and they have major 3g issues. I have complained so many times as calls come to an abrupt end. The local mast is in Hackney and they are trying to get a new one up locally. I am in Tollington Park. I have switched to 2g which is a much safer voice signal but slow internet and it can switch between orange and T -mobile. When my contract ends I am going straight to vodaphone. Whats the point of paying these companies all this money of you cant use their system.
  • Good call (accidental pun) on switching the phone to 2G - will give that a go.
I should probably phone up Orange to have a wee moan to them as well - the more complaining voices the better, I guess.
  • Excellent, a campaign in favour of more mobile phone masts. Count me in.

  • @ Hopping Mad, I was speaking to someone yesterday (Chris) having the same problem with Orange and he said you need to switch to the shared Orange/T-Mobile network. I don't know if you can do this from your phone or if you need to contact Orange to switch you over?
  • You just need to send a text to set up the network sharing. It's pretty good.
  • Still no signal! I'm now writing to Orange for the second time...hope to get a reply this time. Also I have no DAB signal. I wonder if this is related??
  • Don't write to orange phone them up an complain. your paying for a service that you can't use especially if you are on a contract phone. The T-mobile/orange only works on 2G, so no help for the internet. Virgin are planning to have wireless hotspots throughout London which may help but may be long time away.

We do need more mobile phone masts, but am sure there will be lots of resistance to them. There is no evidence they cause any problems
  • they look ugly though

  • How can you phone Orange about their lack of signal if you can't get a signal..?
  • You don't need Virgin there are already over 40 BT Wifi Hotspots in central SG http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=25812&s_cid=con_ppc_maxus_vidZ60_Broadband&vendorid=Z59

You will need to put your postcode into the map below the fold on the page

  • I have accumulated so many wi-fi log-ins on my HTC Desire, passworded or otherwise, that I can walk nearly the whole length of SGR without having to use 3G. The Stapleton's free wifi is rubbish though.

  • Fancy sharing, Arkady?
