New Victoria Line train
  • Has anyone been on the new victioria linetrain. I did a few months ago, but it was amazing. NOt since though
  • I've been on it a couple of times. I think there's now a couple of them out and about.
  • They are rolling them out at a rate of one every two weeks throughout 2010, at the end of which the 1967 stock will be retired. There's been one running the last southbound every day since July last year.
    Arky
  • There was one southbound mid-morning on a Thursday 2 weeks ago.
  • Last train seems an odd place to deploy shiny new stock, what with it being surely the most likely time to get drunks vomming &c.
  • I was delayed on the Victoria line the other week because there were "too many trains on the line" which were apparently causing the power to cut out. I really enjoyed sitting in pitch darkness in a stifling Harold Wilson-era tin can when I should have been at work. I'll miss the old trains.
  • Mrs. L has been on one a couple of weeks ago around 10:30am on a weekday (why wasn't she at work I'm asking myself).

She says the new trains have 'the voice' but now it tells you which side the doors will open.

Oh and she says they have a different patterned fabric. Don't know if she means different good, or just 'different'.

Nah - they're worried that new rolling stock will break down / have problems. So they run it last so any breakdown doesn't cause delays for trains following on. (well, unless its a *really bad* breakdown).
  • I'm 1967 stock - can I retire?
  • I asked the lovely old fellah who works on the southbound Vic platform at FP most mornings. Apparently it also runs for a few hours in the daytime too - he was uite specific actually, the first one is at 10:17 (at FP I huess). He said they are still ironing out some issues so the roll-out is delayed.
More standing, less seats, fold-out seats like on the Central, slightly wider carriages, digital displays, etc.

  • Are they really that old? I thought the current ones were from about '95ish? I'm sure I remember older ones, and I've only been around London since '95.
  • Misscara, perhaps you're thinking of the Northern Line: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Underground_rolling_stock
    A
  • @katiejane, probably what you need is a refurbishment :-)
  • The old guy who works the southbound Victoria line platform in the mornings is an absolute treasure.
  • @Misscara
Isn't he just. Always has a smile and a nod for you, and some of the most charming and thoughtful announcements. His cheer cuts through even the grimmest hangover.

  • @ Arky

It's either fewer seats, or less seating.

  • Thank you Tosscat. x
  • Got on at Pimlico and - low and behold - it was a new train. I wasn't paying attention, so only noticed because the doors made an unfamiliar beep. I got on right at the front, and there were a couple of 'spare' drivers in the carriage being trained.

Pros: 1) Much better lighting 2) More leg space in the aisle 3) More space in the standing area (due to slightly fewer seats and a thinner shell) 4) Digital displays 5) Enormous double-doors throughout - no single doors. 6) Much faster acceleration and breaking 7) Much, much quieter. Sounds more like the DLR.

Cons: 1) I reckon the seats are harder. I would have thought that in the last forty years we would have cracked a balanced combination of comfort and durability, but apparently not. 2) I should mention fewer seats, though I'd happily suffer a slightly reduced chance of a seat for more space in rush hour. Arky

  • Do you really think there will be more space in rush hour? I would have thought that it would just mean you get more people packed into the larger space.
  • Possibly. I'd say there are less 'pinch points' though, and the aisles are wider without being able to cram in two people where there was once one, so it should be a touch easier. Arky

  • I haven't been on one yet. Do they still have the rubbish suspension in the seats which creates the bouncing effect when someone sits down too heavily in the next seat?

I was on a late train at the weekend and a little mouse was having a wild old time diving down the back of the seats looking for treasure.
  • No, the seats are much more robust. Less forgiving on the arse-cheeks though.

  • Well I have in built upholstery in that region so should be ok ;-)
  • re misscara and arkady..

i've genuinely thought about writing to TFL to say how brilliant mr southbound is. he's always got a smile, is ready for a chat, can whistle a good tune and makes arriving at the tube almost bearable.

obviously i haven't actually got round to doing it, but thought v seriously about it...
  • Perhaps we should put together a collective letter on behalf of Stroudgreen.org? That might have more impact than an individual note(s). Unless there are any objections I will draft something for wider approval. Arky

  • Despite being on the Southbound Victoria pretty much every day for nearly three years, I have no idea who you all mean. I hear pretty much no outside noise whatsoever 30seconds after closing the front door and 30seconds before I beep into my office. I love my shure headphones.

Looking forward to the new trains as the only real noise I sometimes do hear is the current train at full pelt.
  • Unless you change from the overland it would be hard to miss the old fellah with the peaked cap who 'looks after' the southbound platform most mornings. He stands between the rail and the track and greets everyone who arrives, gives excellent advice and amusing announcements, and as noted is also a mean whistler. Arky

  • Arkady
I think that collective letter is a splendid idea.
  • Does anyone recall his name? If not I'll check tomorrow. A

  • I may have to walk to FP tomorrow rather than get the overland just to find out more...
  • Andy, as moderator perhaps you might confirm that you are happy for this to go out? Suggested amendments welcome. I have a contact at TFL who can probably find me the appropriate person to send it to. No hurry though, let’s give it a few days to see who might want to contribute.

    Dear TFL

On behalf of StroudGreen.org* we would like to formally present our thanks and praise to [], who regularly supervises the southbound Victoria Line platform on weekday mornings. It has been noted by several contributors to the forum that []’s irrepressible cheer, unfailing supply of helpful advice, and vaudeville-standard tune-whistling greatly contribute to making our daily commute tolerable. Despite the unending army of miserable commuters, he always has a smile and a nod for those in his temporary care. He is a jewel in the crown of your staff, and should be rewarded accordingly. We hope that this declaration of our appreciation can be duly noted and passed on.

    Yours sincerely

    StroudGreen.org

*StroudGreen.org is a forum for residents of Stroud Green in North London, which lies between Finsbury Park and Crouch End.

  • @staplejack: where do you normally get the overland from?

  • A very well-written letter.
  • @Arky. Harringay. Not far.

Would a staff with a jewel in its crown be a sceptre or a mace?
  • @staplejack - why not get the W3? Unless you live on the ladder somewhere? Good point on the jewel-crown-staff thing though.

  • I live on SHR by the library - so the crushing delights of first capital connect are simply too tempting.

I think it is time for the bicycle to make a reappearance, frankly.
  • Great letter.

Will make a note to smile at, or start a conversation with, the pleasant TfL man.
  • @staplejack: Fair enough. How much does it cost? I'm on MVR, and I was using it to get to High&I when I first moved but it seemed to be fleecing my pay-as-you-go something awful. As the W3 is covered by my zone 1-2 travelcard I decided I'd use that when the weather discourages walking. It's less rammed, and I get to see what's happening on SGR.

@Nick: A good conversation-starter is to ask him about the new trains. He gets visibly excited. A

  • He is a great bloke. I only started chatting to him recently, I am not a great man for mornings. I saw him say hello to a regular and I thought I'd like to be a regular too, makes it feel more pleasant. So I started breaking the ice with a nod, moved to a word and now we have a little chat every morning. I guess it shouldn't be remarkable but somehow it is. We should nominate him for a people's honour next time round. Public service should always be like that.

  • I have no idea what any of you are on about, but I'm happy for this to go out 'on behalf of' stroudgreen.org, since you all seem to be keen on it.

  • I'm not keen on a letter going out on behalf of stroudgreen.org, mainly because I don't thing it's the place to start campaigning/representing a collective view. I think the bloke is great, as I've said, but it doesn't seem right to me that the site takes a corporate view about anything. I'd be up for writing on my own behalf though.

  • @Arky when were you using the overground? I think they've only recently updated to allow PAYG customers. Not even too sure on that point as I have an annual season ticket.

Singularly failed to walk to FP this morning, I only remembered that I was going to once I was already down the spiral staircase...
  • @Ian: Surely a community forum is a great place to campaign, if there's interest in doing so? It's a great organising medium.

@staplejack: I was using it in January when the PAYG kicked in. Do you have a season ticket just for Harringey-Finsbury Park? How much is that if so?

  • Send it to the top man Howard Collins who is the Chief Operating Officer of LU http://www.linkedin.com/ppl/webprofile?vmi=&id=28093694&pvs=pp&authToken=TgmY&authType=name&locale=en_US&trk=ppro_viewmore&lnk=vw_pprofile

It seems that as he is senior he will be based at their office above St James Park Tube Station. I found that the address of this is

    55 Broadway LONDON SW1H 0BD

  • How about sending a letter from '[list of names of people who have said upthread how great he is] of Stroudgreen.org'?
  • I agree with Ian.

  • @ Arky zones 1-3. And the annual acts as a network card for discounts on longer rail journeys too.

I don't mind either way if a letter goes out from ST.org, on behalf of named member of ST.org, or from a collective of named individuals. Would you use your real names or online monikers?
  • ok, so how about we send individual letters to the same bloke - persumably the more the merrier and it may even have greater impact. i'm not sure they'll all be penned as beautifully as Arkady's prose but it's better than nothing.

is it good old howard collins who should be the lucky recipient of our letters? would this be worth a go?
  • Quickest and easiest way to commend the bloke is to go to the London Transport website. They have a page where you can applaud the service of one of their employees. They even have drop down boxes to help you describe the chap (age, facial hair, glasses, etc). https://custserv.tfl.gov.uk/icss_csip/ZCreateRequestChangeRelatesTo.do?newTab=CA_12660
  • Given the apparent reluctance in some quarters to formulate an official SG.org response, I feel that staplejack's suggestion of a list of named individuals associated with SG.org would be best, but despite my long years on the interweb I think it would be a bit gimpy to use online nom-de-guerre's.

I suggest the following. Either: a) People whisper me their real names to add to it, and i'll dispatch it on Monday. b) If that gets little or no response (I am clearly a stalker of some kind who wants to track you down, after all) then I will notify you as such and people can give individual responses.

For the record, I thought that the earlier suggestion that SG.org could have some form of customer service awards was a good one, and would be an effective way of collectively giving back to the community. We could come up with categories, and have a vote. that idea will be kyboshed if some people insist that SG.org is not used for collective action, and personally I would take some convincing that that would not be a senseless shame.
