Book group 19th August: Troubles by JG Farrell
  • Our next book will be Troubles by JG Farrell. It was published in 1970, and this year won the Lost Booker Prize.

Bloke in Guardian says: "Farrell's portrayal of the fast-decaying Majestic Hotel and England's even more rapidly crumbling rule in Ireland surely adds up to one of the best books of the last half-century, let alone 1970."

We will be meeting in the Faltering Fullback on Thursday 19th August at 8pm. Come and argue with my oversimplified opinions!

Would be lovely to see old hands as well as new faces.

(Could you make this sticky please?)

  • Two weeks to go, I'm planning to be there. How many others are coming? Hope that the holiday season doesn't stop too many folks from coming along.
  • I'm coming. I think this is the best book we've done so far by the way, I highly recommend it - interesting, funny and evocative.

  • I'm coming as well. Still need to read the last few pages but I am enjoying it a lot. Hope to see many of you there.
  • I'm not going to be able to make it this time - I'm sorry to miss it as I'm enjoying the book. Have a good evening! Hope to see you all next month.
  • I will be there!
  • Tomorrow right? see you then...

  • Hi All
I'm looking forward to coming this eveing although I won't have finished the book. Very impressed by what I've read so far though....
  • see you tonight in the fullback at 8! just had to take a secret extra long lunch break to try to finish it..

  • @sophie
I tried to do that too but was foiled when a drama erupted. So I haven't finished the book but planning to come anyway.
  • I had to do the same but then we had a fire drill at work so my plan didn't work so I am reading whilst typing. Don't think I will finish it but let's see!
