Alice was just a mess overall - an unsuccessful attempt to bolt the style of the Narnia films, itself an unwieldy copy of the Lord of the Rings films, on to a story that wasn't ever designed to work that way. 3D was never going to be able to save that. And Up and Toy Story 3 were both lovely but I simply didn't feel the 3D contributed much extra - and I saw those two in a massive cinema in Richmond, so it's not the room size to blame.
  •
after a coffee and a bit of cake at the new vagabond cafe a few doors down is this "museum".

if you click on mermon74 in this thread you will see he/she has been banned from sg.org.he/she was saying that "this museum was funded by the tax payer and is an absolute disgrace".

more dissenting voices banned in the night with no explanation given to readers...sg.org is looking more and more orwellian by the minute...

anyone actually been to this museum...perhaps after buying some rice n peas and jerk chicken from grannys carribbean takeaway next door...

the wikipedia entry for guillaume retz has been deleted...

  •
if as was mentioned on this thread the shop that the "museum" is in, is/was advertised on the council website for rent.If the council can't get anyone to rent the shop then why don't the council charge minimum and affordable fees to a shop so that a new business can open here? - like a new business opening up like the vagabond coffee shop that's opened a few doors down.It seems a shame to waste this shop where a local person could be selling things that they make etc.

Are there any Haringey council councillors that can comment on this?

Also shop next to Nandos has been boarded up for a long time too...

  •
Islington Council want to spend thousands of tax payers money putting up 20mph speed limit signs on main roads at a time when central government are cutting their funding. The ex leader of islington council lib dem cllr tracey says he is concerned about the council spending this money on these metal 20mph signs, however he did install speed bumps in n4 costing alot when he was leader of lib dem council so arguably he is just playing politics

continuing the theme of councils wasting money

Banned "Memon74 "was unable to pursue his/her discussion on this thread that it was a disgrace that the "museum was tax payer funded".ie spending money on art students mucking around when money should be spent on emptying the bins etc

I wonder if any Haringey council councillors could tell us how much tax payers money was spent by the council on this "museum"? At a time when youth services funding has been drastically cut in haringey by 75% if council money was spent in this shop that they run.

I believe Richard Wilson is a local councillor who reads this forum. Please could he let us know.

carry on

  • i meant councillor terry stacy who used to be leader of lib dems islington council before he installed speed bumps in n4 and got voted out and replaced by labour.he made his comments in islington tribune recently about how he thinks labour council is wasting money by saying they want to put up 20mph speed limit that these signs that will cost the tax payer alot of money to buy the signs and put them up all over the place.
  • Anyway, Tintin has since taken the laurels as the first film to make thorough, integral and excellent use of 3D.
• Not seen Tintin, but I thought "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" was a good use of 3D. The train coming out in "Hugo" is meant to be great.
  • I thought Tintin was rubbish.
  •
orwellian bookshops are putting herge's book "tintin in the congo" on the top shelf and wrapping it in cellaphane to keep it out of kids hands.bizarre that these tintin books that get kids interested in reading have fallen foul of the nanny state political correct obsessions of some lefty and guardian reading adults....to try and keep a tintin book away from kids...you couldnt make it up...strange that england has come to this thought police mentality...mr obrien ...1984...etc

  •
the orwellian guardian readers reckon that the book "tintin in the congo" is racist so has to be wrapped in cellophane and put on top shelf away from kids...

Gordon Bennett...

carry on

  • We keep it (unwrapped) in the graphic novels area with many of the other Tintin books. Children don't buy them, it's generally adults.
  • @Miss annie. What are this years big sellers?
  •
miss A - but adults buy tintin books such as "tintin in the congo" for their kids;and tintin in the congo is seen by many as a racist deptiction of african people.so isnt your bookshop encouraging racist ideas in kids? isnt this the argument?there are racial and gender politics in many kids books from last century, some might say enid blyton books are sexist.tintin is belgian but he does not swig pints of wife beater (stella) or munch on belgian choclates so he is not typical of belgians ...perhaps the bible should be banned as kids read that, packed with violence as well as good blokes like JC etc...how many kids books do you want to ban?

Is Tintin In the Congo a good seller in your bookshop miss A? And have you had any complaints about the sale of this book?

Do you keep tintin books in the graphic novels section so kids cant pick up books like tintin in the congo in the childrens section. Why arent the tintin books inthe childrens section as tintin books get kids reading as they are accessible for kids because of the pictures in the books

just asking...

I bought the Ginger Pig cookbook yesterday as a present. The recipes looked a lot easier than the Hawksmoor ones. I also decided I wanted a Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen based on the name and the picture on about page 4.
  • Caitlin Moran's book is excellent, would make a great present for anyone, but a must for teenage girls/young women especially. Can't wait to read Brian Sewell's book - pure filth apparently.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • There was a programme on the radio last year devoted to Brian Sewell's interest in stock car racing. When it came on I thought I had lost the plot completely but it was for real. He really loves the sport.
  • I really enjoyed the Caitlin Moran book, except for the bit about strip clubs &c which isn't even consistent with her own account earlier in the book of visiting one, and - unlike the rest of it - seemed doctrinaire, not something she'd thought through for herself.

Finsbury Library's copy of Tintin in the Congo has a sticker on the front warning that it was a product of its time, which seems like a sensible compromise. Wish they'd do the same with their Bibles and Korans.
• if you google "tintin in the congo",there is a guardian newspaper article about this; and a discussion on the guardian newspaper message board after the article, where many people give their opinion; a good read...
  • This museum is a dump. There are better animation projects around or Ardman
  • On way back from vagabond noticed that this is now a beauty parlour of some sort.
  • ...'cos we need another one around here.
Especially one that specialises in afro hair and nails..
