Anyone tested their soil acidity?
  • Wanted to grow some Rhododendrons but found they only like acid soil. Has anyone tested their soil ph round here?
  • Yes, it’s really alkaline. Camellias, Azaleas,Rhododendrons none of them do very well. Little ones in pots do ok with acid compost.

  • I thought Rhododendrons (sp?) had different coloured flowers depending on whether it was acid or alkaline soil?
  • I think that's hydrangeas - pink for acid. blue for alkaline?
  • That's Hydrangeas. I did notice a large Rhododendron in Woodstock/Enis/Perth Road recently. Not sure if potted or otherwise isolated but it caught my eye. Reason for asking is that I noticed them in abundance at two locations in Scotland recently, but it doesn't sound like a natural habitat around here without ongoing attention.
  • Whoops, yes must be hydrangeas. One day I'll have a garden and I'll actually learn the names of different plants. I'm much better at recognising vegetables.
  • I've been particularly successful with sunflowers and hollyhocks in the Stroud Green soil.
