anyone got any spare empty screw top jam jars please?
  • I released the inner 50s housewife in me over the weekend and made litres of jam and chutney.

I'd been hoarding all my used jars to pot it all in, but hadn't really judged how much preserve about a stone weight of apples would yield!

If you have any spare would you mind passing them to me please? I'd happily offer you a pot of apple and honey jam or seriously spiced apple chutney in return.

    Ta.
  • Ooo your jam/chutney sounds wonderful! No jars I'm afraid but any idea what I can do with the 60 or so figs I have on my tree? I'm not a big fig fan but thought I could make some sort of preserve and give it away.

  • Oh, I love figs! I'll buy some from you,I have nothing to swap I'm afraid as my tomotoes have been a dismal disappointment this year.

I'm hoping for great things from my pumpkins though.
  • Italian fig jam. Good with brioche or toast or with cheese and crusty bread. (according to Waitrose)

    1.5kg Figs
    750g Jam sugar (with pectin)

Look over the figs and discard any that look at all mouldy.

Cut off the stems and place them in a large saucepan.

Squash the figs with a potato masher or your hands, breaking them into a lumpy paste.

It may look as though there won’t be enough liquid, but don’t worry – there will be plenty.

Put the pan on a low heat and pour in the sugar; stir and let the sugar dissolve.

After a few minutes, turn up the heat and bring to a boil; cook for 6–9 minutes, stirring occasionally until thick.

Heat the jam to 105°C or until a blob of it sets on a chilled teaspoon –if it runs off, boil the jam for a little longer.

Remove from the heat and ladle into 4–5 sterilised 350ml jars. Leave a space at the top, put a wax disc over the jam while still hot and cover with the lid.

Once cooled, the jam will keep for up to 6 months, though do refrigerate it once opened.

On no account should anybody give Miss Cara any empty jam jars they have lying around! I want them!
  • Does anyone know where to buy the waxed discs around here ?

  • Thanks for the recipe missisclack! If you find you have too many jars can you please pass some my way? In exchange for a couple of jars of Italian Fig Jam of course :)

I believe there will be a jam making demo at the Well Oiled Festival on 11th Sept in the park. I suppose I could donate some of my figs to that, and miss annie you are more than welcome to some as well. I've also been asked to do a knitting demo, and there will be a yarn stall and handweaving and spinning demonstrations, amongst other things.

  • @ Ali - I've never found (but haven't really looked for) wax discs, I just use a piece of grease proof paper and hope for the best!

@ Misscara, after all that I'll certainly pass on any spare jars. I'm not feeling hopeful 'though.
  • Grease proof paper is a great idea. The only place I have seen the old fashioned waxed disc and clear cover with elastic band available is in John Lewis in town.

  • Yes, John Lewis does the discs, you might even get them in Waitrose. I remember my grandma used to cut them from the wax paper that sliced bread used to come in but I think it's all wrapped in plastic now.

  • My mother makes italian fig jam and oh my goodness it's wonderful. Especially stirred into ricotta.
  • You can definitely get waxed discs from Lakeland, as well as new lids for your recycled jars, if you need them.

  • For wax discs, Gill Wing in Crouch End, I would have thought stocked them. Or Divertimenti in Marylebone (hark at me)

  • Oh God. Have I really become an obvious recruit for the WI?

If I told them that I got kicked out of the Guides for smoking Rothmans and drinking Strongbow in the toilets, would they regect or embrace me?
  • If you want some jam jars, try asking for them on freecycle. Can I have a decent and easy chutney recipe please? We've got shed loads of apples and pears in our back garden.

  • I got kicked out of cubs for chucking an aerosol can on the camp fire. I still regret that to this day.

  • @missisclack
I think that the Shoreditch branch of the WI (Shoreditch Sisters)would welcome you with open arms.

A lady in my office in a keen pickler and preserver. She says that if you use screw top jars you don't need the waxed discs. If you fill the jars full almost to the top, the air will apparently condense and create a vacuum to seal the jam.
  • @nick_m - cubs was where I learned how to throw aerosol cans on fires

  • Missiclack: I have some screwtop jars you can have. Can you collect Thursday 9th between 5pm and 9pm? Val

Ali: I cut circles from the lining of cereal packets. Val
  • Misscara: Missiclack did not come for my jars, so you can have them if you like. I'll be at home in middle of day on Sunday. I'd love to try some fig jam!
  • My figs are still not ripe, so lets leave it for now to see if missisclack responds. If she hasn't got back to you in a few days I'll have them from you.

  • Misscara: Okay.
  • Oh, am I too late? I've been out of the loop for a week or so.

Val, I could collect Saturday or Sunday please?

However, if Misscara has claimed them, that's fine. My fault for asking a favour then not checking on responses!
  • also, @ Nick_M I will post my (apple) chutney recipe soon. It's spicey! Is that OK?
  • No haven't claimed them missisclack, my figs still haven't ripened and I don't think they will now. I've had only 3 ripen so far but the other 40 or so are still really small and green :(

  • @missisclack - the spicier the better! Thanks a lot.

  • Take heart Misscara, I'd given up on my tomatoes and grapes but they are gradually ripening in the Autumn sun - there is still hope for your figs.

There's a nice, simple recipe for plum jam on Hubbub's website.
  • My tomatoes haven't even fruited yet, never mind ripened! I've had limited success with my lettuce and herbs but nothing else this year.

  • Missiclack: Yes, you can collect jars on Sunday 19th between about 9.30 and 12.30. If inconvenient, we'll arrange another time.
  • Misscara: Jars still available. When would you like to collect? (Daylight hours)
  • Oh dear. This is getting unnecessarily complicated! Sorry Val/Misscara.

So, I can collect this Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday eveinging this week. Or pretty much anytime from next Monday. That is if you are still willing to surrender them Val? I could split with you Misscara?

    Thanks both.
  • Missiclack/Misscara: Come Tuesday or Wednesday evening before 8pm. May be enough for you both.
  • I don't need them any more, but thanks!

  • Missiclack: Don't know if you still want jars, but scaffolding has just been put in front of my shed, so can't get jars until next week. Sorry. Let me know if you want to make another arrangement. I am removing my address from website soon, so note it if you want it.
  • Just reviving this thread from a year ago...

Does anybody WANT a load of empty jars? Because of the kerfuffle last year I've been saving them and now find I don't need them and can't take them when I move. So if anyone does want them please come and get them by Sunday or I'll put them in the recycling.

  • Yes please, I am doing a jam/chutney afternoon course in Nov so may need some to ply my new skills. Swap you for boxes?

  • That's great, I need to get rid of them asap and need the boxes... I don't have transport other than my bicycle though, are you passing by Upper Tollington any time within next few days?

  • I have no car either! I am off Lancaster road though so near enough to do a swap on foot?

  • OK, whisper me your number and I'll ring you, I might be able to get a friend to come in her car, in which case I'll bring the jars!
