    http://www.learningcenter.sony.us/assets/itpd/reader/

I remember looking at this a while ago when the website was laeked to exist. The leak came a day after I wrote how glad I was that the book publishing industry in pretty much unchanged in almost 100 years, and despite the good to come out of digital music, it was ultimately the chaos of an industry in its death-throws.

And now they are already saying "iPod of books". The parallels are the same apart from the years and years of illegal activity as a premise.

Thoughts? This is a worrying bit of kit for me.

battery life is no longer a factor for this as it only uses power per page turn.
Dre, I think this is a time where online originals, with a cafe-press kinda style, or even a flickr style website of self publishing.
    Online slush-pile.
    Who's david gettman?
*ninja edit* Aha, founder of OO.
That site, despite what I think is a fundementally good idea, is ugly as sin

people love books. they love how books feel. there is something about the sensation of turning the pages and being able to read in the bath, on the train, on the loo, that I don't think a computer will replicate for many, many years.

And I had this very thought as well. But then it really came to me:
    "No, books are shit"
They require both hands to comfortably hold open to read the bit in the crease. Any attempt at one handed holding is ruined every time you want to move your head to the other page. A proof being I read a book for about a tenth as I hold a gameboy. Surprisingly, books hurt my eyes more, because books require this stupid third-party add-on know as "Proper reading lighting"
Baths, trains, loos.... Same real set of issues as the handheld. Its fucked if it gets wet and any other situation, people leave you alone.
This gadget sparks a real conflict in me.
Especially the chance of getting to sample hundreds of books from a pc before buying. This is a long overdue upgrade to shelf-browsing. Any chance to spare myself being patronise by people less intelligent than me is a sellable function.

Also, being the intarwub, some kind of social usercreatedcontent suggestion system a la lastfm.com may even expose me to sample books I never would have thought about.
Bookshops have Richard and Judy reading clubs.
Books are shit. Bookshops are shit. They should be the first against the wall when the revolution comes. I may have to buy one now.
