I love Petek, but definitely think there's room for a good place with a fire pit and non-fancy seating. Like Bingol on Green Lanes, opposite the Salisbury. They do a dish with cubes of steak and an aubergine tomato sauce that makes me salivate just thinking of it. But now my friend round the corner has moved away, I never cycle over there to eat it.

So long Dudleys & Miso, I was never tempted.

I tried New York pancakes in Front Room the other day and was not impressed. I like FR, but there are still definite weak spots in the cooking. Sausages and eggs florentine - thumbs up, but aurora sauce on fish etc., very bland.

Saw some guy steal the tips in Front Room today btw, hotly pursued down the road by the chef, owner, waitress and a customer.

    Rodavissed! That is perfect :D

@graeme Hilarious! I shall try to incorporate 'the verdict is in...but the jury is out' into a conversation tomorrow. Note to self -Must watch CSI.

    I LOVE Hamlet cafe.

Only twigged last night which one of the hardware shops Rodavis was. The two times I've been there, the guy seemed baffled by simple requests (duct tape; sharpening stone) to the extent that I assumed it was a front.

Does anyone know anything about the Turkish restaurant that is opening in the old Miso premises?
  • edited 12:35PM
Yes, it is the second branch of a successful one in Stoke Newington which specialises in egg dishes. I only went once and the food was good and there was live music and dancing of the traditional type which is not to everyone's taste but my brother in law and I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to a Turkish restaurant in this area, there really is too much pizza etc.

You do know we already have Petek, right?

I went to a very good Turkish place on Upper Street earlier this month, part of a chain called Gallipoli. OK, it wasn't in Shepherd's Bush, but still, I wouldn't go to France and open a Brit-style greasy spoon called Crecy.

Gallipoli is so good and popular they opened a Gallipoli 2 some years ago and both are going strong. They're only about 50 yards apart. I think there's even a Galiipoli 3. Very good lively restraurant. Great food. Good for b/day parties.

prefer Petek to Gallipoli - been twice and not really impressed either time

Gallipoili is great, it's just about the only place on Upper Street I will eat in. I think it's Gallipoli Again, near the post office, and it does a very good value veggie mixed meze. The Thai place next door is also good and cheap.

Yeah, my trip was to Gallipoli Again, in fact. I initially took the 'Again' in the invite to simply mean that some of the group went there a lot but no, there it was on the front of the restaurant.

The 'essential stop shop' or whatever it's called is closing down within the next 4 weeks.
  • edited January 2011
Not so essential then, after all. Shame I've kitted out loads from there

Another shop where the closing down sale will be my first ever visit. And I bet I don't even find anything then.
  • edited 12:35PM
It all cheap crap. Like Homebase, but without the advertising.

I thought Grissom was the cooler.

So where is Rodavis, is it a DIY shop/hardware shop, and is it open or closed? Also where is the other DIY shop?

    Signed,

Confused of Stroud Green (looking for a purveyor of jubilee clips)

    P.S. What was Miso?

Thanks, Misscara. Opposite little Sainsbury's sounds like a good starting point.

There are two opposite Little Sainsbury's, in fact, and I managed to find what I was looking for. It's so nice to go into a proper shop that sells things that aren't prepacked in bubble packs in quantities of five!

A&E Hardware (I'm guessing that's the new one?) seemed to be better stocked than Shop 4 Less (but I guess it might depend what you're looking for) and the staff (proprietor?) seemed more on the ball.

Dudleys to become a Mexican eh, good news I think
  • edited 12:35PM
hmmm, Desperados in CE lasted about 5 minutes before it closed down. Although I notice Upper Street branch is getting a facelift. Its probably a good addition. Its not sushi, but then its not Pizza/Kebab/Chicken.
  • edited 12:35PM
@Sincers, is it a branch of Desperados then?

I can think of one particular person on this board who is probably doing a dance for joy at the thought of a Mexican place opening nearby...
  • edited 12:35PM
No I don't know if its Desperados. Although the venue seems to suit their style. ie small. Not that I'm an expert or owt.

Mrs. Taff-Bach will be delighted though I doubt they can equal her chile verde burritos. Good Mexican is hard to come by, those Texans have a lot to answer for. But, on the other hand, I would kill for a breakfast burrito joint in the 'hood.
  • edited 12:35PM
Not really Stroud Green, but there is a Mexican place opening up on Holloway Road next week: http://www.amigos.co.uk/
  • edited 12:35PM
    mmm, burritos....
  • edited 12:35PM
@Emma - I saw it today and actually groaned with a combination of pleasure and fear. If it does good burritos and tacos than between that and the cake shop I am going to explode.

It says 'Cafe Mexicali' I have googled but with no luck. I don't think it is the same as Mexicali in Soho.
