New features: The all new Stroudgreen.org
  • We're now up and running with the new system. There are a bunch of new features for you to use:

Private Messages: You can now contact each other directly. There are two ways of doing this. Click "inbox" and then "start a new conversation" and write the names of recipients like an email. Alternatively, Click on someone's name and then choose "send a message" in the sidebar on the left

Notifications: You should get an email notification if you get a private message. In fact, you can get all sorts of email notifications. You can control what notifications you get. Click your name in the top bar, then "My Preferences" in the left hand sidebar.

Mobile Phones: The mobile format is lovely. For those of you with posh phones (yes, even Blackberries) look at http://www.stroudgreen.org

Links: If you remember to write "http://" then if you write a link, it will automatically become clickable.

Profiles: Click your name in the top bar. There's lot of new stuff there. You can add pictures and stuff, like facebook. You can write on each others walls, but I'm not sure why you would.

Mark all viewed: New button in the top. Does what it says on the tin.

Posts: Now automatically saves drafts. "Announce" is the new sticky. If there is a sticky thread you're done with, you can 'dismiss' it.

Bookmarks: Click the star to bookmark your favourite threads. Click it again when you start to hate that thread.

As for other stuff, opening a thread at the "Last unread" still doesn't work, but we're looking at it. The politics page, calendar, the map and the weekly email are lost for now. As is markdown, which so many of you spent so long learning. We'll update as we go with any new features.
  • Bravo.

I think the picture stuff still isn't working.

  • Ooo, mobile is nice. Well done.

  • Splendid! Thank you.

  • can we now add photos to posts? I never worked out how to do it before

  • Not yet, but perhaps when we've had a bit of time to play with all the different add-ons.

You can see what's available here: http://vanillaforums.org/addons/addon

  • Is the time out of sync? Or is it just me?

  • Slowly getting used to the new layout. It's all good. Although it's a pain in the arse not being taken to the last read post.

  • What poxy said.

  • On the 'unread' thing, we still can't work out why this isn't happening. As soon as we have, we'll fix it.

  • Nice new site, thanks Andy and David. With links, is it possible to have a clickable sentence (sorry, don't know techy name) like in the olden days that takes to you a website, or we just have to paste the whole address?

  • The thing I like the most is that it seems so much faster.

  • Agreed, seems to be faster, which is always nice.

My only very very tiny gripe is that page numbers are at the bottom of the thread, rather than at the top.

  • Just turned on rich text editing.

    Let's see how this goes.
  • This will either be brilliant, or the death of us.

  • Are people back to opening threads at the latest unread comment? Seems to be working now, sort of.

  • So, I think 'latest comment' is now fixed and we've added the calendar back.

  • Yup. It works for me on both pc and phone. Well done. Now, where's the Ignore button?

  • It works on the nice fast mobile site, thanks.

  • 2 mini-gripes...

The little flags for new posts on a thread are different on the desktop and mobile versions. Let's have some consistency, dammit. Desktop version for preference.

I've viewed the desktop version on my phone and now I can't go back.

  • Even if I understood what that meant, I'm pretty sure that's in the 'nice-to-have' category.

  • Test post: The City from Mount View Road

  • Oooo.  Hope that works for you.

  • Given the evident fascination with what we keep in and keep out of the site, this is the sort of stuff we keep out. At least this lot asked and said they'd send us stuff, which is a change from Chinese viagra wholesalers:

I was looking at your site stroudgreen.org

Just wanted to know if you allow links on your site. The link would be back to one of the top poker rooms in the world whose online presence I am currently working to enhance.

The best news is that if you're happy to include a link on your site, then we would like to send you some high quality branded poker goodies such as hoodies and poker cards. These would be posted to you immediately after the link is posted on the condition that you agree to keep it on your site for a set time period - usually 12 months or permanently (with permanently being our preferred option).
  • Amusing. It's a bit like offering payment for advertising, but not quite. Unless you can trade branded poker goodies such as hoodies and poker cards for server space and food?

I would guess permanently would be their preference, but they ironically reveal their hand earlier on in that sentence in a way which might get me to pitch bullishly for 12 months if I was desperate for branded poker goodies.

  • Maybe it's a double bluff. By revealing their likely incompetence at poker, you might be more likely to log into their poker site.

  • Has the traffic  to the site changed much since the changes came in?

  • I wonder if an RSS/atom feed of new threads would be possible?

  • One thing I would say is that my bookmarks were previously set to: http://www.stroudgreen.org/3/

So for a while I thought the website was down.

  • OK Photobucket works.  I guess Flickr does't like SG.org.

  • I have IE8 at work and it regularly crashes when I try to look at this site (but not always, strangely). The error message says something about a script that causes IE8 to run slow. Next I get the prompt to stop running this script, but by then the browser's already unresponsive. Just thought I'd let you know. Otherwise all works well on Chrome at home, looks good and is much nicer without the heart.

  • It's become very very very slow on the antiquated ie I use at work and can't update. Works well on Chrome.

  • Don't use Internet explorer

  • I don't where I have any choice.

  • The error message says something about a script that causes IE8 to run slow

I get the same and it is very slow to type text into.  This at work on alocked down citrix set up

Still nearly  50% users are using IE  see  http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2011/11/the-end-of-an-era-internet-explorer-drops-below-50-percent-of-web-usage.ars

  • It really isn't our fault that IE is a piece of shit.

  • I just tested it on IE7, 8 & 9. Looked a bit crappier in earlier versions but worked absolutely fine. I'd suggest its something more to do with specific setups than IE per se. Works fine on Safari, Mozilla, Chrome and mobile phones but give Andy a call and he'll come to your office and see what he can do. I'm sure its stated in the sg.org SLA somewhere.

  • Ok, thanks David. I knew it would get picked up in the right spirit. I wasn't aware there was an SLA for this site!

  • Script issue when using IE seems to have been fixed  Thanks my browser no longer hangs

  • Strange it seem to have come back when I did the post above !!

  • andy, do the announcements-are-the-new-stickies still have to go through you? i can't find an option to do it myself for the book group thread.

p.s. the site looks wonderful, thanks

  • yep i will do it.

  • This could just be my monitor, but is anyone else finding that once a thread has split into more than one page, it's not immediately obvious from the numbers at the bottom which page you're on?

  • Yup, same here.

  • Help. Please tell me in  one short sentence and words of one syllable how to open a thread. I tried clicking on the star but it does not work for me. I just have a simple laptop.

  • There is a green button at the top right that says 'Start a New Discussion'. You can click on it. 'Button' and 'discussion' exceeded the syllable limit, I still hope this helps.

  • Marquis. Thank you.

  • Haven't visited the site for a few months.  I used to get a weekly update by email so I looked at it then but I don't get those any more.  Will have a look at all the new features later, but just for now does it do that Facebook thing (and - shock horror - HOL thing!) of notifying you when someone posts onto a thread that you've used.  I might find it irritating - I'm not sure, but without it I don't check the threads I've been on often enough so I miss it when people answer me.

  • I'm same as rona, used to get weekly update emails but don't any more. I can't find my 'preferences' to hange this.

Help anyone?! I miss the emails...

Howdy, Stranger!
