Old pubs of Stroud Green
  • A neighbour of ours in Lorne Road is writing a monograph (wot that??!) on pubs of olden day Stroud Green up to Hornsey Road (one is now a mosque)Nobel (once a sofa showroom) Silver Bullit (mod hang out) and Ferme Park Arms (now a swingers club). If you can supply any true historical facts, pics, and indeed interesting gossip from 1740 to 2012 mike and me would like to hear it. Also ... Which is the oldest pub, and where was the Earl of Essex? Chang

  • on a recent thread arkady mentioned a lady who does a blog about hornsey road..perhaps she could help?

  • On the basis of prvious post, I think site should have been closed (as per overnight closure) for entire Christmas period :-)

  • Chang,

The  Worlds End was the Earl of Essex, I cannnot remember  what year the change took place.

  • I wrote a few bits about old pubs on a previous thread about a year or so ago, can't find it now though.

  • I've just put up a post about the Eaglet pub on www.thehornseyroad.blogspot.com that your neighbour might be interested in.

I've a few more pub posts planned and would love to hear about your neighbour's work. Could you ask if he'd like to contact me on dellamirandola at gmail dot com?

    @Misscara,

Thanks for reminding me of that post- do you mind if I quote it on my blog? It would make for an excellent post.

And thanks to miss annie for finding it.

  • @norton, The Earl of Essex became The World's End in around 89/90. Used to be co owned by Pat Jennings I beleive

Nandos used to be a pub called The Osbourne

  • Oh and The Faltering Fullback was called the Sir Walter Scott until around 1995

  • Does anybody have any info on The Sussex Arms which was located at the junction of Tollington Way and Sussex Way?  It's since been converted into flats.

  • There does seem to be an unhealthy interest in licensed establishments (history of) on this forum.

  • I went to a party in The Sussex when it was a squat, after the pub had shut. It was quite well organised with proper security and DJs and everything. It was pretty mental and I seem to remember lots of illegal substances being consumed by whatever means possible. I also seem to remember a bloke dancing with a dog. This was a very long time ago and I was very drunk so everything else is a bit hazy I'm afraid.

  • My last flat was opposite there. It still is a squat, they've been trying to evict the squatters for years I have no idea why they can't get them out.

  • I think you're both thinking of The Devonshire Castle (located at the junction of Tollington Way and Axminster Road) and still has the sign hanging outside.

The Sussex Arms was converted into flats about ten years ago.

  • Ah yes, quite right.

  • I'm talking more than ten years ago, but you might be right Poxy.

  • has anyone heard of a pub called Danzi Bar?

  • Yes, it's now the Stapleton.

  • Ok thanks. Helpful. Does anyone remember the slogan it had? Every nite is... ?

  • Who can remember THE FAVOURITE that was once on the corner of Beaumont Rise & Hornsey Rise ???

  • I can. Nothing special, but 2 pals and I went there regularly in the 70's. One of them swore by the Guinness, which is perhaps why we were there, although there was nothing worth drinking for CAMRA fusspots like myself. PS, and, for the record: I am a reformed character in my old age, and hardly drink at all now - except for coffee, natch!

  • The Favorite is now flats I think .
