Just noticed that the Bull Highgate has joined up as a member.
The reason that they have joined is even more exciting.
That means they're opening up here doesn't it. Doesn't it? I hope so! The Bull is a great pub. Wonder which one they're taking over. Dairy? World's End?
Not that I think either need taking over, I should add (furiously backpedalling). I like them both too. Just got a bit over-excited.
Not that, sorry. That would be cool though.
An SG member has joined the staff of the Bull, I'll leave it to them to announce themselves...
The Bull is great. There does seem to be a bit of a gap for a really good specialist beer bar round this way - both the Bull and Jolly Butchers are quite a long, wobbly stagger away after a night on the Brewdogs and Rocheforts...
Was In the refurbished Maynard pub in crouch end on Tuesday and was told it is now part of the real ales chain which the Oxford and old dairy are part of. The bar man told me they were taking over the worlds end pub aswell. Maynard is great and a fab beer garden.
Anyone tried the Dovetail in Farringdon? They have an inch-thick menu of Belgian beers. I have become poorly there several times.
It’s around the corner from the Jerusalem Tavern too, one of the best olde-worlde pubs in London.
I’d love to see a brewpub on the Stroud Green Road.
Glad to see everyone's positive comments about The Bull, it is great and I hear they have a lovely new manager :)
Aha - congratulations! Now you can get them to open an outpost (the Bullock?) in SG
The Jerusalem Tavern is excellent, the Lamb and Flag in Covent Garden is a good olde-worlde one too.
@Arkady I've been to the Dovetail a couple of times. Great place. I'm not even a fan of beer, but I've found loads I like.
I think a SG.org trip to the Bull could be in order ...
Thanks everyone for all your positive comments. It'd be great to see you all at The Bull!

Oh I love the Lamb and Flag! And it’s genuinely an old pub too; the Jerusalem Tavern was converted fairly recently (from and old clock-makers if memory serves) though you wouldn’t know it to look at the place.
Three olde-worlde pubs in my London top ten are all within five minutes of each other in Wapping, and have spectacular river views. In order of splendour:
The Prospect of Whitby
The Captain Kid
The Town of Ramsgate
The Mayflower on the other side of the river (in Rotherhithe) is great too.
But topping them all is The Grapes at Limehouse. It is now owned by Ian McKellen, and has a large pewter Gandalf I the corner in full YOU.SHALL.NOT.PASS mode.
I went to a wedding party at The Prospect of Whitby. There was very nearly an unfortunate incident on the balcony whilst we were craning our necks to look at the old gallows.
Must go for a gander at the Grapes.
Top heavy?
If you go in The Lamb & Flag down the back look for Ballerina Bob's plaque. He was a friend of mine who died a couple of years ago. http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2008/jan/17/dance.culture Think there is some info on the wall about him as well. Not sure what the criteria is for a plaque in there, but it was something like putting ten grand over the bar, I know it wasn't anything as simple as just dying as the plaque was there long before he passed away.
Yeah I saw that. There are some really melancholy tributes to past regulars. A well-worn flat cap, for instance, framed and encased.
Going by that model, it must be time to think about ordering a plaque for Four Eyes to go up in the White Lion?
I met a girl at the prospect of whitby, now she's my wife. ah those were the days.
Got lost on the wrong side of hornsey lane and found myself at a pub called the landseer the other night, well worth the stagger
Landseer is a nice pub and so is the Swimmers that side of Hornsey Road.
I used to virtually live in the Landseer. Mighty tapas. Swimmer too, though it's bloody expensive.
The Prospect of Whitby
My mother served Mrs. Simpson and Edward a couple of pints in the 30's. I like to go in there after walking down from Tottenham Hale to Limehouse. Why isn't it the prospect of Deptford?
Arkady
Cheeky rascal!
If I remember correctly The Whitby was a ship that was moored nearby for years... possibly a prison hulk.
I don't think I'll ever walk all the way from Tottenham to Limehouse again. It's the stretch around Bow, just south of the Olympic Park. This tender heart cannot bear all the monsterous 1960s-70s flyovers, tower blocks and crumbling industrial estates that tore the heart out of the area.
The Lea is a prolatarian River, not covered about with the houses of the middle classes. All hail your oily waters.
Having looked at your menu, @TheBullHighgate, I'm not very impressed with your veggie option. Can we get some more imaginative dishes?
Once again a BIG thanks for all the positive comments on here, it's great to know that people are willing to endure a bumpy ride on the 210 to come and see us when there are so many great pubs in Stroud Green. Did you know we're only about a 45 mins stroll up The Parkland Walk... perfect for a Sunday afternoon walk, so why not come and try our fabulous Sunday Lunch menu http://thebullhighgate.co.uk/food-menu.php?menu=8309, you can always get the bus back if you're not up for the walk home :)
Also, as a special offer if you wish to book any of our events (as listed on Eventbrite), phone the pub on 020 8341 0510 and mention stroudgreen.org to receive 10% off (don't use the Eventbrite link or you will be charged full price). The next one is our Dinner hosted by top New-Zealand Winemaker Michelle Richardson on 26th Jan http://thebullhighgate.eventbrite.co.uk/?ebtv=C
Hope to see you all soon, whether you are returning or making your first visit. Here is a FREE BEER coupon to use when you do come! http://www.londonbrewing.com/ :)
@Idoru - what kind of vegetarian dishes would you like to see? Why not pop in for a drink and talk to us?
I don't know where the Bull is. Is it that pub at the top of the Parkland Walk on Archway Road on a corner, that used to be called something else? I once got ratassed there and walked all the way back down the PW in the dark. Worst bit was getting down the steps to Florence Road in the dark. It's as black as a beaver's bottom down there.
You're thinking of The Boogaloo Krappy. Don't go there, you'll be the oldest in there by at least 40 years.
I was wrong about the veggie dishes! I'd based my thought on the website. Went into the pub on Sunday and had a great veggie nut roast. There were also another two (I think) main meals and a couple of starters. Good show!
Had an amazing meal there the the other week. Great beer, great food, brilliant service. Try the pulled pork with pineapple.
Look on the website for details of the Porklife event on 23rd Feb. That one sold out in less than an hour but another date will be announced soon.
Are dogs allowed at lunchtimes?
I would think that Misscara would positively encourage dogs at any time! More helpfully, there was a little dog in the time I went to the knitting group.
@ilovegreyhounds - We do allow dogs, especially your lovely greyhound, please bring him up! We have a gorgeous Italian Greyhound regular and it would be funny to see them side by side!

@TheBullHighgate, I've just been trying to look at your website, and every page I tried to look at crashed. I either get the message "A problem with this webpage has caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the page", or "Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. It appears that the website continues to have a problem." Any ideas what might be causing it? Thx.
Vetski - The site was ok yesterday, as far as I know. I needed to look at it a few times. Maybe something to do with your connection? How is it now?
Andy - evenings are tricky as the kit is in the kitchen and we get insanely busy, but if you have time off in the week when we brew you are welcome to come up and have a go.
Chang - I have told Anke and Bronagh that you will be joining them for knitting group. They will save you a seat.
@TheBullHighgate, my connection seems to be fine for Twitter, sg.org, Yahoo, Google etc, but I've just had exactly the problem I described above with your site - tab recovery on your Home & Events pages, and website restore error when I tried to look at your April events!
So direct q - what do you charge for a Sunday roast lunch, and do you have anything special happening on Sun 29th April which would preclude a large group booking? Can't confirm yet or tell you how large, this is currently a half-formed thought!
Hi Vetski, I'm on there now from my laptop at home and not encountering any problems so I think it must be something to do with your connection. I'm on a day off today so not sure what we have on 29th April but if you email the details of your event (time, number of people etc) to lauren@londonbrewing.com I'll pick it up and get back to you tomorrow.
Thanks for that Idoru. We only put public events on the event page, but I already have a private booking for the private dining room in the afternoon til 2.30. I can take a booking for after 3pm if that's any good to you Vetski?
Thanks @Idoru. @TheBullHighgate, I'm afraid that would be rather too late for what I have in mind. Never mind, another time! Thx.
