    i've just got my head around themes versus styles. this is soooooo convoluted....but it does make sense now.

    Doesn't it mean colours versus... well, placement.

    not quite, its colours and placement versus structure. Now I get that, its getting easier. I'll look at the update thing soon. so a theme affects structure, ie, if there's a div here or there. and styles affects colours and placement of those divs and bits.

    delete everything from your appg folder and replace with fresh copies from a new download, see what happens.
