Book Group: 23rd July, The Card by Arnold Bennett

<p class="MsoNormal">In homage to my hometown, this month we will be reading The Card by Arnold Bennett – a short comic novel written in 1911.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Set in The Potteries (Stoke-on-Trent), the story follows <span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif";color:#252525; background:white">"Denry" Machin from washerwoman's son to Mayor of Bursley</span>.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Bennett’s works range from the comic to the unremittingly bleak. The BBC recently asked if he was the Edwardian David Bowie (<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-27920331">http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-27920331</a>;).
