butcher and (not more but) less gentrification

i heard that the spot where France Fresh Fish used to be is going to be turned into an organic butcher - yet more evidence of gentrification of SGR

  • I thought I noticed a sign saying that it was going to be a halal butcher. Not customarily evidence of gentrification.
  • Yep, just cycled past - enormous banner for Halal Butcher plastered across the window.
  • Can it be free range as well to get the holy trinity of specialist butchers...?
  • I don't eat meat anymore but I am sure people would be pleased there is another butcher in the area to choose from.
  • Would have much preferred a good fishmongers! Right now the only option is to go up to Crouch End.
  • I use the one on Seven Sisters Rd, Morrisons pretty good too.
  •
You mean the two down seven sisters road! If you go there and pop into Michael's greengrocers as well for some veg and cheese you might be able to justify the trip @luirette.....

  • I agree, I would have preferred a fishmonger.

I have to admit I am a bit disappointed with this central area on Stroudgreen road.
This bit could be so nice as there is a bit more space around, it could be a little bit like a "village" with a coffee, a butcher, a flower shop, a nice welcoming pub... but for some reason I find it a bit depressing.

Maybe the pub isn't the most friendly one, maybe there are too many gambling spot around, maybe that's the general setup... not too sure actually.

Anyway, good luck to the new butcher!

@soon

Coffee? What do you call Vagabond, La Bolangerie Bon Martin, & the Front Room Café?

There's a flower shop on tollington park as well.

Can't have everything - there are plenty of nice pubs and a butcher nearby!

(Though you are right.... it can seem like a blip on the road)

  • Are we talking about the same Stroud Green Road?
  • @south_to_north: That's exactly what I mean, there are already lots of nice places but it has the potential to be much better:)
I just think the section from Christopher Charles to the Kebab restaurant could be more lively.

Yes, I would have preferred a branch of Moxons. We'll have to wait a bit longer.

I actually quite like that bit. It's very friendly there, by the bus stop, lots of people know each other. Although, I have seen some sights standing there, waiting for the bus to Crouch End, over the years. I love the shop with all the plastic stuff and household goods. They've got everything, and seem to be constantly expanding their range.

  • @ Dorothy - I like that shop too. The guys are always polite and they have a good range of stuff. They are also pretty good with returns/no quibble if something is not quite right...

@Soon<;/p>
I'm slightly baffled as to what you expect from a mixed, urban area. It's not a village and it's not Highgate.

There is a flower shop beside Sainsburys, as well as the one on Tollington Park and there's even an overpriced hipster gift shop next to Vagabond and a mid-century vintage shop for that 'let's pretend we're in Brooklyn not Finsbury Park' experience.

You say that maybe the pub isn't the most friendly one which of the numerous pubs do you mean? The Fullback, Dairy, Stapleton, Hopsmiths, WB Yeats, new one that was World's End or one of the others?

Tony's butchers is excellent.

I often complain about the amount of craft beer/gastro pubs and coffee places and wish it could go back to being slightly less gentrified - guess it's proof that you really can't please everyone. Are you a new arrival to the area?

  • @MissAnnie: Sorry for using of the word "village" which probably shouldn't be used for any places in London.
I arrived fairly recently (3 years ago) and love the area as it is. I understand everyone has different needs and also love the shop selling all sort of plastic stuff!

My point was more about the fact this section of Stroudgreen is really wide and though it could be nice for restaurant/coffee/pub as they could use the space as a terrasse. I wasn't thinking hipstery places, I was just thinking places for people to gather.

That's it, didn't mean to offend anyone.

No need to apologise for anything, we all love a bit of debate here.

There was some sort of plan for a green outside the Hettie Holland gift shop next to Vagabond. Not sure how advanced they are.

  • @soon I totally get what you mean and with that part of SGR with its wide pavement has so much potential
  • God knows, I'm sure most of us have found bits of Stroud Green Road depressing at times and couldn't quite put our finger on why.
  • It's depressing because of the absolutely dreadful postwar architecture. It's ugly as hell compared to the rest of the street, with substandard materials, mismatching designs, and poor streetscaping.
  • @missannie leave the craft beer and the coffee out of it! It's not their fault! Also regarding Tony's; have never seen it the same way since I went to baldwins in green lanes - that place is like butchery heaven!
  • Christopher Charles to the kebab place has remained weirdly ungentrified over the past few years. Not saying that's a good or a bad thing, but it's surprising given what's happened to rest of the road.
  • I was told (by a usually reliable source), that that stretch, and Tesco's building are all owned by the same person. Maybe they are just happy with the rents and biding their time before selling up.
  • Yeah, that makes sense. The flower shop was for sale though, wasn't it?

Got a beautiful whole salmon in Morrisons Easter sell off yesterday. Making coulibiac and enough left for four sizeable steaks.

All the bargains in TESCO today. They always sell off a ton of meat, fish, dairy and chilled food for cheap on Easter Saturday as they are closed tomorrow.

The last real part of Stroud Green road is the stretch from the estate agents on Tollingto Park to Tesco. A preservation order needs to be issued. Brutal Modernism it might be, but it's history.
  • ah, it is called something along the lines of BUTCHER SHOP

am going to change the title of this thread

  • Think it's called the Butcher Farm, and says it will sell meat and fish. The shop front and signage is uninspiring
  • Excellent, that means that those, earlier in this thread, who were looking for a fishmonger in this spot will be well pleased!
  • It really is uninspiring! It's interesting that stretch of shops, you have a nice fish restaurant becoming a generic kebab takeaway and a good fishmonger becoming a very generic looking butchers - as the title says this is reverse gentrification...
