A couple of folk I know are looking for local desk space. Anyone got some, or know anyone who might let some?

Yes, but I have to make enquiries.

I'll find out and let you know.

This is evoking similar feelings I had when wandering around Hearst's castle in California. Needless indulgence, all the signs of excess/success going wrong. Anyone been there? It's bonkers.

    Rosebud.

I loved it - I just wish I'd been when the grounds were like a safari park too.

The swimming pool was my favourite I think.

The underground one? Yes that was cool, well, all three were cool. As far as the eye could see, he covered the land with European soil so he could grow Mediterranean trees etc. The main castle was meant to be some kind of weird homage to a Spanish pueblo. Then other bits were to reflect Italian streets, the lamps I think.

My favourite thing about the whole place is that he went to all these lengths to recreate his vision of Europe and then he stuck a load of giraffes and monkeys all over the place. Brilliant & bonkers.

"I want Europe, with a splash of Africa, in California."

Hearst Castle is amazing. Whatever you think of it, the man had amazing vision given that there was nothing before he had it built, not even a proper road along the coast...

    Aren't we all fancy.

I know someone else who's been to Hearst Castle.
