Saw this at the cinema last night - very highly recommended.

It's very slow, very Russian and very beautifully shot. So if you're into that sort of thing, this will be your sort of thing.

It gets 96% on Rotten Tomatoes http://uk.rottentomatoes.com/m/1130023-return/

I second Andy's recommendation. Truly gorgeous. There's a whole genre of Russian films that look like that. Sadly, I can't think of any off the top of my head just now. I have brought shame on the mother country.

Speaking of foreign-language films... Has anyone else noticed how crap subtitles are? They translate about 60% of what is said, and rarely in the style of the original writing. I only notice it in Russian because that's the only other language that I speak fluently, but it makes me wonder how much I'm missing when watching other international cinema.

On Thursday we saw Boris Godunov at the Barbican. The supertitles missed over half of what was said. I don't see the point of watching a play when you don't get the chance to appreciate the writing.

Since my mother in law stayed with us for a period we have subtitles on all the time, I have a problem trying to understand things without something written that lags behind the main schpeil

@ RC, French, Spanish, Italian are all the same,
