I'm a newcomer here but after reading postings from you guys for a few weeks, I' really have to say I think this site is nothing short of one great bitchfest - so, the ciabatta in such-and-such a cafe isn't made with the right ingredients, in some other place they don't grill the chicken with the right herbs, such-and-such a pub doesn't serve the right brand of fashionable beer, they don't do the right brand label items in the gift shop - you know the kind of thing. Come on guys, what's with this? Where did you all go to finishing school? Get real! Grow up!

Stroud Green is an appealing place but it's the diversity I like, not the bogus perfection accorded to the kind of establishments that feature in Observer restaurant reviews or the Time Out style shopping guide!

Bloody hell, what is it with the proliferation of happy, nice, bubbly (*shudder*) people on this site at the moment? Where's Tosscat when you need him.
What's wrong with a bit of criticism anyway? people are surely entitled to express their views even if they are not positive.

Hi Colette, I have been partly scared off by posters like KRS, hence my earlier discussion, 'Eggshells'.

I feel well and truly policed of late and so feel I have little to contribute.

I take it that KRS doesn't read any newspaper or watch the news because it's all 'bad' - we need to grow up Colette and realise that be have to positively affirm SG in order for us to truly appreciate it.

    KRS: you are spot on

But I have learned not to let little things like this worry me. life is too short!

This site has never been policed. It's just that whinging is boring.

Whinging is boring, but if someone posted on here, having been somewhere new and just said it really added to SG's rich tapestry, when the reality was they were served up shit in a bun, then it adds nothing whatsoever to anyone's life, does it? Or am I missing something?

If we're all going to be affirming all the time can we have some sort of traffic light system on posts so people can steer clear of negativity if they find it difficult to handle.

We haven't had this much controversy since we had to create Eugene's Lair because all the deeply geeky posts were putting everyone else off.

Is negativity the new manic miner?

Bottom line, if you have strong opinions why not air them. I don't happen to agree with the anti-Coldplay thread ... but then again I don't feel the need to defend Chris Martin either.

Surely that's the point of a discussion forum? The freedom to join in the conversation, agree / disagree etc. It would be boring if we all thought everything was 'nice' and agreed with one another.

I for one would like to see more of tosscat speaking his mind. I don't always agree with him, but it's nearly always entertaining :)

Nothing wrong with a moan once in a while and I don’t mind clever whinging, which I love because it’s spelled with a ‘g’ here instead of without, though I’ve learned my lesson and dare not risk calling it British spelling.

What makes me uncomfortable though is when I’m reading snipe-y posts about local businesses it sometimes it feels like talking behind people’s back and broadcasting it.

I know for a fact that some of our local business owners read these discussions. I was talking to one such person in his establishment and he referenced this site and specifically a conversation I was involved in. I didn't let on I was involved in the site. He said he was grateful for the constructive comments made about his business and that any criticism which came his was always acted upon.

So, please think on before going off on one. Some of the things which have been said on here of late have gone way beyond constructive criticism.

I'd like to think I wouldn't say anything on sg.org that I wouldn't say in person if the circumstances were right.

joev - whinging and whining are two different things. you can do both at once, especially on the internets!

there's a pseudo-statistical saying in the restaurant industry, something like: if you go to a restaurant and have a good time, you maybe tell one person about it. if you go and have a bad time, you tell ten people. in other words, it's just human nature (especially english human nature) to have a good old moan. i've found plenty of good stuff in the short time using this site, more than enough to compensate for the natural background level of griping.

but maybe there is an argument for a specific thread for out-and-out bitchiness...

Is it all to do with the x-it thread?

I'd say that to the chappie's face, but wild horses won't drag me into that shop.

@ JoeV - I'm super confused about "whinging": do you mean "whingin'", or "whining" when you say without a 'g'?

This isn't a Coldplay forum, its a Stroud Green forum. Chris, Boris, Ronaldo, bendy buses, rude service or crap food are all fair game. The restraint we've asked for is merely towards local Stroud Green businesses and even then only to criticism that's at best subjective and clearly not constructive or fair.

This really isn't unreasonable and its sad that some of you feel censored by such a simple request.

I don't understand. If that guy has taken the comments on board and acted on them, then that's great isn't it? Better that surely than people not complaining, but simply not going there and their business going down the pan?

If I were him, I'd have signed up to the discussion and told people he'd acted on their comments. That way, people might possibly give him a second chance.

It's all fair game if you ask me. People pay good money on market research (though not that bird who came on and offered £20 for a 90 minute interview). Here you can get it for free!

When I was responsible for the marketing of a tourist attraction, we monitored blog posts which related to us, and always responded whether it was positive or negative.

BTW - If it was the guy from Front Room, I preferred the sticky tables to the manky tablecloths, but you need to sand them down and revarnish.

I think this conversation has wandered somewhat off the point. I didn't say 'don't criticise anything'. What I said was I didn't like the tone of some of the comments as being prissy and hypercritical. Verging on the Muswellhillian. Not the same thing at all. Just a personal view.

Having just caught up with this thread, I have to say, as a relative newcomer myself, I really don't recognise the charge of bitchiness/ snobbery. I find much of the internet is filled with hateful people being nasty and narrow-minded, and my experience of this site is that it seems to be used by nice people who care about where they live but aren't too up themselves about it. I go generally with the "don't knock local businesses unfairly" line, but I can't see any comments in, say, the Front Room or X-It threads, that I would consider hypercritical.
