Main headline on the front page of today's Telegraph:

"You have the right to shoot dead burglar"

The glee in this headline means that I can't help but feel it got cropped by a sub-editor. The second sentence would have been something like "About bloody time" or "Start your engines!" or "The Wait is OVER"

You can STAB a burglar! You can PUNCH a mugger!

But, regrettably, you can't ambush, torture or chase people with cricket bats. FOR SHAME (c) Telegraph 2008

Not really related, but has anyone seen the Mail on Sunday cinema ad re: the battle of the sexes.

It makes me want to weep.

I'm sure that I'm in a minority here, but I think it's ridiculous to expect a person to use 'reasonable force' on an intruder. I don't think I could make that sort of a decision under the circumstances. Unless you're trained in this sort of thing, you do whatever it takes to survive/protect your family. And if the intruder winds up dead at the end, then it's his own bloody fault.

That being said, I don't think people should own guns in the first place.

Goodness, if I beat an intruder to death I'd be seriously worried about myself.

How much does it take to beat someone to death? A good whack over the head with a full wine bottle might do it.

I'm just sayin', there ain't no way that a person is going to stand there and calculate the exact amount of force needed to knock out the guy without killing him.

I understand people are actually quite difficult to kill without adequate weaponry.

Wasn't that why Nicholas Cage was in prison in Con Air? Because he accidentally killed a man in a bar fight because he was so super strong and didn't know his own strength even the other guy totally started it. So it was OK because that made him a good-guy who was only in prison because it's so easy to kill someone if you are a special forces trained assassin who gets in a bar fight.

So it all seems very plausible. If it can happen to a hollywood star like Nicholas Cage, it could happen to you.

Most of what I know I learned from television (not from 17 years of full-time education). If it's on Law & Order, it must be true.

Con Air was a terrible film, but I watched it twice because I had a school-girl crush on John Cusack.

It takes 1,700psi of pressure to break a human skull. I learned that from AQA.

One of our other members has a massive crush on John Cusack. And she's definitely not a school girl any more. You know who you are...

1,700psi of pressure is what Nicholas Cage gets when he makes a fist.

Con Air was rubbish, but had a surprisingly good cast.
