Things that make me feel like I'm living in a village

  • I was in Cheltenham yesterday visiting cousin who lives there. Very pretty standalone houses in the middle of nowhere surrounded by fields. I was wondering what it must be like living there. It did look very pretty. I was the only non white face around.
  • My 'warm glow' moment was a few weeks ago in Stoke Newington. For Christmas my brother bought me a bike mount so I can attach my iPhone to my handlebars. It's a plastic mount which lives on the bike and a waterproof case into which the phone is popped. It's got one of those plastic covers that allows you to still use the phone in the case so you don't have to faff about getting the phone out. So I cycled to Stokey with my phone attached, and I'm sure you've guess what happened next. Yep, I chained my bike up and happily skipped off leaving the phone on my handlebars for all the world to see. <div><br></div><div>When I returned having realised what I'd done the phone was gone. Then a chap came out of his shop and asked me if I'd lost something. He had seen what I'd done, removed the phone and case from the bike and put it behind his counter. He then kept an eye out for my return so he wouldn't miss me and returned my phone all safe and sound. It was a lovely moment.</div>
  • That is amazing! I had a similar thing with a group of youth outside Akdeniz, watching my bike for me and telling me off for not locking it properly.
  • Nice to hear stories about decent human beings.<br>
  • That's nice to hear idoru
  • It was pretty fantastic. I was and still am very grateful.
  • What!? Can't believe Crouch End KFC has shut :-( not that I used to go there much but still.

Best one for miles. Nags Head one is ok, the one by FP station is atrocious.<div><br></div><div>EDIT</div><div>I am informed that even though there was a notice up to say they would closing at the end of Jan, Crouch End KFC is still open. Much rejoicing! I'm going on Saturday while they're still there. </div>

  • Spelt it wrong though.
  • I like their meatloafs.<br>
  • The article says it is replacing the Dixy Chicken though (not KFC), wasn't that the one opposite the Queens?<br>

  • I love a good burger, too. Best ones are normally served in pubs. Don't eat them often; if I really long for a quick and dirty snack I pop into the big M for a cheeseburger and nuggets.<br>
  • They do a really very nice lamb burger in the cafe by the lake in Finsbury Park.
  • Unfortunately, I don't eat lamb. No red meat unless it's venison (only in season and once in a blue moon), or barbarie duck breast. Don't like the taste of red meat. Chicken and pork for me. Not even half-half, I can taste the red meat immediately. <br>Although, totally strange, that I do eat the big M's burgers, which are beef. I'm just a weirdo, man. <br>
  • Pork is red meat, although it does turn white when cooked. Any flesh from a mammal is red meat.
  • Sorry to disagree, but pork is definitely not red meat. Red meat: clue's in the name. ;-)<br>

Pork is a red meat because it is a livestock product, like beef, lamb and veal, and all livestock are classed as red meat. The amount of myoglobin (an oxygen-carrying protein) in animal muscle determines the color of meat; pork contains less myoglobin than beef, but it contains more than chicken or fish, even though the meat considerably lightens in color when cooked. This classification means that when scientific studies are published that link the consumption of red meat with increased risk of heart disease, cancer, and overall mortality, pork is lumped in to this category. I grew up on a farm and worked on a pig farm from the age of 12 the department of agricultural class pork as a red meat along with the USDA.

It's not really true, I have killed skinned and eaten rabbit it is a very lean meat admittedly and it have numerous very small bones seemingly more than other animals. I think what your sources are talking about is something called rabbit starvation and from what I remember that affects people who eat only rabbit as it lacks certain fatty acids they don't get the correct balance of nutrients. I remember reading somewhere about some American soldier who were stranded on a island during ww2 that was overran by rabbits they all ate well and got seriously ill.
  • But it would be an interesting scientific experiment to run. It reminds me of a French man who deliberately tried to give himself scurvy, it is a lot harder than you think but he was spectacularly successful at it as it killed him.

Rabbits are our faves on Hornsey Rd Chang
  • Rabbit is so good!<div>I had a very nice rabbit dish at the Stringray café on Highbury grove about a year ago.. I wonder if they still do it, I'd go back just for that!</div>
  • Back to the topic, we clearly live in a city, just a few minutes away from the tube and therefore the centre, but I do feel a sense of community in SGR that you just do not get anywhere in zone 1. It is indeed nice to be recognised by your local shop owners, etc. I don't know if it qualifies as a 'village', but I do understand why this thread was started, and yes, it is lovely.
