  • Bit surprised that the student accommodation block couldn't attract a commercial retail unit in that space. As you said Arkady - it's for a good cause, but I am nonetheless surprised, as rents are likely to be high for a charity (unless exemptions exists??)
  • Thinking about it... it's part of the affordable housing, rather than the student block. So maybe the organisation that's dealing with the housing (whose name I forget) is also responsible for the lease on the shop, and maybe they have some sort of pro-charity policy on this sort of thing. I agree that it's surprising, I'd have expected something rather more commercial.
  • Since charity shops are such a common feature of the contemporary high street it's surprising that, until recently, there has only been one on SGR.  Crouch End and Muswell Hill have pretty much the full set each and there are no fewer than four on the short stretch of Holloway Road between 7SR and the Nag's Head.  Possibly even five.  While the shops may well produce  a decent dividend for the charity that sets them up, the fact that there is business rate tax relief available of between 80-100% means that there is no benefit to the local authority.  A proper commercial enterprise would have been preferable.
  • I would take a charity shop over pretty much any likely commercial enterprise, because you're much more likely to find something surprising (so long as it's not one of those horribly over-curated ones which only have the same books as WH Smith had four years ago).

The approved plans fir in with the surrounding Victorian buildings. Now it has permission the developers are applying for a cheaper modernist design that looks like a prefab. It's an ugly trick, and anyone who cares about the appearance of the area should take the 60 seconds required to register their objection. Click on the link to see it. You can see the proposed building in the document called 'DesignStatement'.</div>
