I am curious as to the Stroud Green earworms. 6 music are asking for your earworm

The term earworm originally comes from a translation of the German word
'Ohrwurm'. It refers to the experience of having a tune or a part of a tune
stuck in your head. Often a person experiencing an earworm has no idea why a
tune has popped into their head and has little control over how long it
continues.

Hello

We are new to the Stroud Green area and we have began looking at buying a property. In our online search we keep getting shown houses in the Harringey Ladder. we are not familiar with the ladder but it seems we can possibly buy a house on the ladder over a flat in Stroud green. They seem to be in close distance but wr are unsure whether a house on the ladder would be better or just to try and live in the area we want .
Any thoughts on the ladder? Anyone live or lived there? Any help on the area would be much appreciated.

There are some posters I find annoying. I'm sure there are also some posters who find me annoying.

This is probably true of many other sg.org-ers.

Sometimes it's good to read views from people with whom you disagree, but sometimes it goes a little beyond disagreement and then it's less good. I wonder if one way to improve things would be to have a 'blocking' feature so that people who, for example, find me annoying could just see a blank space instead of my blatherings on.

I appreciate that you run this website for free and that I'm asking you to do some more work for free.

That's the place that had those lovely big pencil drawings in the windows. Got chatting to the two friendly guys in there, from Lithuania, who have done most of the work on it themselves. Good chunky wooden tables and benches, lovely sunny place to sit. It will be called 'Vagabond' apparently: no sign up yet. I don't drink coffee so can't rate it, but had a very acceptable cup of Earl Grey. Great to see something good happening with this corner - it's been a depressing mess for years.

V for Vitor! Yes - SG star barber goes solo in Tollington!

‘anything for the weekend?’

Good news for smart Stroud Greeners!! One of N London’s best and friendliest barbers is setting up on his own in the throbbing heart of ‘da Green’.

Hurray! Vitor, the unassuming Portuguese star of the odd ball shop ‘Chaps and Dames’ in Tollington Park, has justopened the doors of his own barber shop . It’s on the same street – just down before the merry Park Tavern at ? 164 Tollington Park Road, N4 3AJ at the legendary SG ‘Nandos’ crossroads. I warmly recommend you make a visit to give your ‘barnet’ a new year treat and turn a few heads outside Tescos (easy) or the Dairy (a bit more of a challenge, I admit).

Go on, you know you’re ‘werrf it’ (!!)

Vitor has cut the hair of my whole family from 4 year old tot to grinning granny and all the fussy kids, teenagers and glamour-puss wife in between. We all have him to thank for keeping us smart and cheerful . A nicer guy and more modest bloke you could not wish to meet, and anyone will tell you he is a really strong, technically excellent, hair dresser/barber at a very reasonable price. In fact I am told several slick Hornsey Road policemen make a bee-line to him for very arresting hair cuts – not to mention the most fashionable kids at IAMS school, and the dapper manager of Christopher Charles Estate Agents!! My GQ-styled brother from the US came and went there and said (quote) ‘He may sport a Kojak cut, but boy, that dude can cut hair’. So, there you have it.

Vitor was, of course, the star and humming mainstay of ‘Chaps and Dames’ which started as an arty barbers and lost its way somewhat with a bizarre mix of dusty merchandise, blaring TVs and often a barky dog (and sometimes barky owner, it has been alleged). Thank goodness Vitor is now able to shine in his own gaff without these distractions. Discerning Stroud Greeners - please go and support this excellent local barber.

I would not normally write such a rave review but, at this difficult economic time, I really think this classy clipper deserves to succeed with his terrific tonsorial business and you could be the ones to help him turn a close shave into a permanent wave.

C’mon, say it: V for Vitor!!

Short stories by Annie Proulx - the collection is called Close Range, but different editions have different subtitles: Wyoming Stories, or Brokeback Mountain and other stories. They're all the same. You can either get a nice understated cover or one with moody Jake Gyllenhaal on (I HATE film tie-in editions).

We decided to all read one of the stories to make sure we all had one to talk about, and because I couldn't remember the names of any others, we went with Brokeback Mountain - it's only 35 pages. Then I guess we'll read as many more as we have time for.

Old Dairy again unless anyone has any objections/suggestions?

New people always welcome - our male member specially requests more male company!

Hi there,

I would like to help to put Stroud Green on the environmental map and see if we can work towards making a Stroud Green a plastic bag free zone.

I am neither a hippy, nor a tree hugger, just someone who has lived in the area a long time and would like to do more to invest in our area - I am concerned, not by the vagrants they exist in every town centre, but by the number of empty shops. By creating 'buzz' for the area we may get more people wanting come and visit - Time Out already covered a cafe for us and I think that the number of real quaility restaurants from Japanese to Maurition on Stroud Green Road, together with the New Improved Finsbury Park can make Stroud Green Road a 'destination'.

But it concerns me that Tesco has a mountain of plastic bags in it's recycle tent and there are things that we can do. I would rather do this as part of a 'working group'. And I have got a strategy, so I would like to propose a meeting. I have a couple of dates in mind and will doodle poll it, meeting at Old Dairy. So is anyone interested in trying to create something special out of Stroud Green Board.....?

Those of you au fait with the traffic bollards at the junction of Regina Road and Tollington park will be aware that they are the subject of a long standing battle of wills between council and driver. Bollard is knocked down, bollard replaced, bollard is knocked down, bollard replaced. At some point one side will say enough is enough.

Or perhaps not. Neither driver nor council will back down in the stand off between the two. Bollards have fallen, bravely in the service of the council and of residents that value ability to manoeuvre a tight turning into their street. Yet other brave bollards will still come forward to replace them.

Today another new bollard was put in. I am putting this thread in place to see how long it lasts between it is knocked over again at which point I will update. Watch this space...
