Jeremy Corbyn: Absolutely. The islanders do not have the right of return, but they have recognition as stakeholders who will contribute to the consultation exercise. It is a non sequitur to say that we will consult them, but do not trust them to live there. In other words, we trust their opinions, but do not trust them to look after the place should they have the right of return. I mentioned that I attended...

Last chance to submit making the difference bids to improve Stroud Green
As well as being the deadline for views on the W3 Bus (see previous post), this Friday is also the deadline for submitting ideas to our local neighbourhood improvement fund for 2010/11. The way it usually works is that all the feasible ideas go to an Area Assembly meeting for residents to comment on and then local councillors make [...]

W3 Bus under review " what are your views?
I am a big fan of the W3 Bus, which I use regularly as it travels the length of Stroud Green ward from Weston Park to Finsbury Park Station (so much of a fan I put it at the top of my website!). However, I know it can sometimes be frustrating with recent road works and diversions causing [...]

Lynne leads march to save Whittington A&E
Stroud Green campaigner Katherine Reece joined our local MP and hundreds of local residents to march against the closure of the Whittington A&E last weekend. The march gained lots of media attention, which has hopefully sent a clear message to the Government about how unpopular these health cuts are. Sadly, I couldn’t make the march as I was [...]

Cashpoint crime and a late night visit to Hornsey Police Station
Yesterday I had to take a late night trip Hornsey Police Station after narrowly avoiding my bank account being emptied by cashpoint criminals. Stroud Green Councillor scores recycling victory
Last night was the Council meeting which set the budget for the 2010/11 financial year. Stroud Green Councillor Ed Butcher is our finance spokesperson so presented our alternative budget, with a detailed and costed amendment calling for extra police, more recycling, and a freeze in Council charges (paid for by cutting Labour’s waste and spin).
Labour rejected our budget amendment, and bizarrely attacked [...]

How long does it take to buy a yellow bin and fill it with grit?
Unbelievably, according to Haringey Council it takes 8 months to buy a grit bin and install it on our streets.
As I reported in a previous post, in January I passed on to the Council a pile of requests from local residents for more grit bins on Stroud Green’s hilly streets. The Council’s website says “suggestions [...]

Women and Equality: Equality Bill (Age Discrimination)
Lynne Featherstone: Following on from the question from the hon. Member for Walsall, North (Mr. Winnick), and given that the Equality Commission now agrees that a mandatory retirement age is discriminatory and should be outlawed, I should like to inform the Minister that there is an opportunity in the Lords at the moment to table an amendment on this matter. Will the Government table such an amendment to end...

[Mr. Joe Benton in the Chair] - Violence Against Women
Lynne Featherstone: My hon. Friend makes an excellent intervention. The logic is upside down. In an ideal world, the woman and the children should stay in situ, and the man should be excised.
