  • Hi, Just off the back of this thread, we're looking to get a quote for a new boiler, I wondered if anyone had recent positive (or negative)  experiences and could recommend someone to come give us a quote? Many thanks.
  • True, if you only need it once it isn't that cost-effective.  If you're also renting cars though, then I guess it makes sense.

  • zipcar do van hire also, and there's a van next to Finsbury Park station you can access through them.  We've been using their service for 5 years now, and it generally works pretty well.

  • Offer your services as Uncle-for-hire.
  • We use M & S Insurance.  When we moved into the area it was quite tricky finding an insurer since the area has history of subsidence, but M & S didn't have any problem with it.
  • The school used to receive funding (she told me, but I can't remember if it came from the Council or directly from Government, I suspect the former) to provide these services.  Unfortunately the cuts have meant that this funding stream has dried up …
  • @confromable_kate: yep, the deputy head told us that they had to drop them because of cuts, and that the school couldn't afford to pay for them themselves.  She did tell me that Breakfast Club continues, which is great, but not so helpful for us per…
  • @checkski: why can't you say anymore?  Are they secret?  Perhaps that's why she didn't tell us about them. @Jorgan: Interesting.  Based on our visits we felt exactly the same about both schools.  Ashmount is our 1st choice, SG 2nd, (PP 3rd) mainly …

  • Really?  In which case we were mis-informed by the Deputy Headteacher who showed us around.  That would be an odd thing for her to do... Perhaps you're thinking of other organisations who use the School's space, rather than activities which are run…
  • For what it's worth we looked at both SG and PP, and have seriously considered both since they have different strengths/weaknesses and (in different ways) we were impressed by both of them.  Ultimately we have put a preference for SG in our applicat…
  • When we moved out of our maisonette in 2009 we used these guys, who I would recommend: http://www.alltimeremovals.co.uk/
  • What?  and where?
  • Though he has so many failed policies, it's a bit like protecting yourself in a downpour with a pointy sword.
  • Apparently Vanilla does prohibit user names with spaces https://vanillaforums.com/discussion/336/spaces-in-the-usernames, perhaps these accounts are from before that block was put in place? Or it's an admin-customisation.
  • PS - How do you refer to a user (using the '@' symbol) where the user has a space in their name?
  • @Papa_L: "I think Pappagone's are very good though. But I'd slip Piccolo Diavolo's in between the two. We are blessed for pizzerias in Stroud Green. Not tried La Favorita yet." Interesting, haven't tried Piccolo Diavolo's yet (though we've been…
  • You've got to bite (unless it's a very Sloppy Giseppe).  I did used to be a Porchetta fan, and when we moved here it took me a little while to consider Pappagone.  But I was fairly evenly split between them until Porchetta had their refurb which I c…
  • @Papa L: I think you mean 'to Pappagone'.
  • They certainly outnumber bakeries (and delis).
  • @vetski, indeed, check out St John's Wood 'Multicultural Towers'! :-)
  • If you click on Finsbury Park, and in the pop-up window click on Map you can see which areas are covered: Manor House (N4 1)Finsbury Park (N4 2)Tollington Park (N4 3)Crouch Hill (N4 4)Most expensive: Crouch Hill Least expensive: Manor House
  • Thanks @Mirandola, really interesting piece.  It's funny, the article doesn't' tell me anything I didn't pick-up from our visit there, but putting it in such stark terms is really striking.  Food for thought.
  • Weekly spelling tests?! But I rely on spell-check! :-)
  • Regarding the diversity issue (yes it is indeed sensitive), I certainly want a diverse environment for my kids, so that they are exposed to the wide array of cultures, colours, languages, wealth, etc. that exist in the real world.  What I must confe…
  • Or hold the phone to your ear that is not near the road.
  • That's really useful, thanks both @conformable_kate and @Ali.  We visited Duncombe this week who make a big deal about pushing their kids and homework (arguably putting too much emphasis on it, for such young children). Neither me nor my partner ha…
  • Yes that's right the ethos at Bowlers will not change, But the practicalities, the approach to some activities, and the services offered by Bowlers all may change. I should say that none of these items would in any way detract from my recommendatio…
  • Not quite accurate.  The Bowlers garden is partially occupied by the builders who are finishing off the school.  Additionally, it's hard to tell the impact on Bowlers of the noise, footfall, etc. from the school.  Despite having seen the plans I was…
