Whispers

edited June 2009 in About this site
We seem to be getting an increasing amount of whispering going on. I'm not complaining, this is absolutely fine, but the whispers do tend to skew the threads for others. I'm wondering if its time we started operating a private messaging system. However, my early forays into shoehorning the whispering system into messaging wasn't great, it worked for the most part but I wasn't convinced of its security. What to do.

Vanilla 2, out soon, seems to have moved to a more "normal" messaging system. I don't really have a preference either way. Though I think it's worth mentioning that all whispers can be seen by the board administrators, which is a bit naughty. If whispers are kept, I'd rather that they were private between sender and receiver.

The problem has been that vanilla is supposed to be a feature-free, lightweight forum that we've kept adding and adding to. So some of the stuff (like whispering) is the best bodge available. I think PMs and email notifications of PMs would be ace. And this wouldn't be visible to admins.

There's a plugin for whisper notification.

How do Whispers work? Do I fill in the Whisper box with the username I want to send it to and admin emails it to them?

    Almost.

David transcribes the message onto parchment using a pigeon feather quill and unknown liquids for ink. Undercover of the night he quietly breaks into the house of the recipient and whispers the message into their ear while they sleep. The parchment message is left under the pillow.

Reports that David rifles through any drawers are completely unproven.

Easy. Seems to work well. Just remember to whisper directly back, otherwise you risk your animated discussion of where best to score Es / intimate details of embarrassing physical complaints / the merits of selected porno web sites being broadcast to the whole of Stroud Green.

Can we set up a secret anonymous sub-forum forum where we can discuss issues like that? I'd like answers.

The problem is, once you've started down that road, the sub-forum gets a sub-forum. And so on, nests within nests. I was on a site like that for a while, eventually it was like being in the Masons.

How do you know this site isn't already like that?

Because I'm so cool I'd already have been invited into the inner sanctum?

It's called 'North London Chat', it's on a site called gaydar.
